Do you think schools are payed prisons
Or state run babysitting.Imagine taking 12 years to learn to read and write and do simple arithmetic.
I think they are obsolete. We need schools that actually teach you stuff.
What do you think?

i think we are being taught stuff, if u didnt notice some kids are already rediculously far behind and some kids are exceling so if ur so smart u dotn need all that time then u should be in and overacheiving class
If I had my way 50% of school would be practical exposure and hands on in industries.
Go to clothing manufacture, glass bottle plant, watch an operation in a hospital,
go watch them make pasta sauce, printing a newspaper and the list could go on for about
3 miles.
i think its kind of like that, but i dont know what school you go to, but i wouldnt be able to do anything with ever going to school.
you need the education it provides.
like reading and writing and simple arithmetic
all very useful in our world
u must not have a good school then i guess idk wat to tell you then

i could teach the 3 r’s in less than 4 years not 12.

they cant do that stuff if they cant even read and write.
and math goes far into everything.
like measuring the ingredients in the pasta and such.
my school actually has most of the things you said, you can choos to go to one or more o them along with your other classes. but it is a highschool, and by then you need less reading and writing and more intros to job potentials

well go get a job as a teacher then
cause not every one can teach that fast and certainly not learn that fast
I think school is very necessary…but only to a certain point.
Like some math stuff, I never understood what the point in it was. But you have to work to get what you want in life I guess and school is a perfect example of that.
I think kids are so molded and bumbed out they cant see what I am saying.

no, i think you cant grasp the necessity of learning things like reading and writing and common math
you would be writing this now if no one ever taught you what letters mean when put together
i think the schools for the most part are too strict, which makes them feel like a prison, useful, but cold

this is called indoctrination.
They want to make you “ready” for the boring work world.
Most people hate work just like they hate school.
Wouldn’t you like to love work and love school?
It should be so good you don’t want to go home at night.
high school is an absolute waste of time. teachers are lazy and assign busy work. the school i went to really looked like a prison and had students being treated like prisoners
People come to accept things as standard. We’re lazy.
spiratec9 wrote:

Yeah I know what you mean, schools are basically nothing more than brainwashing with some useful skills like reading, writing etc. thrown in.
One of the biggest problems with schools is that you spend so much time sitting down being fed education rather than exploring subjects and coming to conclusions. For the first few years of your life you learn through exploring, experience and practise. Then you go to school and spend the next 14 years sitting down and shutting up.

I could not agree with you more davekey
I agree with this post!! most schools don’t really teach you much. they pretty much make you life a living hell while your there

my sentiments exactly.Thank you.
So many kids think that prison taught them something really valuable.
sure first 4 years.then 8 wasted years.
Very true. Basic reading, writing, and mathematics (depending on your definition of ‘basic’) are fully learned by the end of elementary school. The rest is simply brainwashing to make you fit their society the way they want you to. Anyone who doesn’t give in is driven into failure.

absolutely correct.In my view.
in my opinion i would of rather been home schooled!! one of my friends is home schooled and he doesnt have to do half of the crap i had to do.
I’m pretty sure the first six years (K-5) are the only ones used to teach reading, writing, and simple mathematics. The next three years (6-8) are more complex math (Algebra I), and more advanced concepts behind reading and writing. Also, 6th grade is when you really start learning history and science. High school finishes algebra and teaches geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. The reading and writing is very complex, history really gives you an understanding of the world, and science is taught thoroughly enough that you can see connections between what you’re learning and the real world (speaking of which, my post…).
I sort of see what you’re saying, but not everyone learns at the same rate. I’m amazed to see that there are people my age (15) who still can’t write a decent essay, or solve simple math problems. It’s called No Child Left Behind, and it means that the smartest people are stuck with everyone else. Blame Bush, it works every time (because it’s pretty darn accurate every time).

my friend that is home-schooled has lots of friends. because he went to public school up until his 7th grade year then he went to homeschooling.
and also, if you really think about it, after high school, how many of those friends do u actually keep?
maybe one or two… maybe more if ur lucky.. but i think most of my friends i have met at college or other places.

that is ideal because by 7th grade he knows all the basics.
Then he can start on his real education.
well i personaly think that school is a payed prison cause lets face it we cant leave for 10 years so we are practillay trapped and it is alright till you get into high school cause then there is too much theory and it is really boring i belive and i am so sick off school i have almost killed my self to get out of it

you are good example of how schools are failing.
Its very sad and it must change.
My son put his foot down in grade 10 and quit.
He now has a very good computer repair job and another job as a systems

this is all after you have wasted 6 out of the 12 years in conventional
school.
If I had my way I would be turning out high quality engineers and artists
by the end of grade 12.
I have a friend who is in grade 10.
He is talking about going to art school after grade 12.
His art is so incredibly good I told him he would be teaching the art
school how to do it.
Don’ wait I told him go straight into industry with a solid portfolio.
Ok how the heck is it a wasted 6 years of your school life learnig your ABC’s and 123’s??????????????????????????????????? We all need that stuff to even be in a tech trade, hands on stuff?? You really are Fu******* stupid arnt you???
And with all of that being said, some kids have trouble learnig as quick as others and that is why they have so mnay years. And it is not a waste of 6 years, I have met people who never went to school or had home schooling and they couldnt read, count, didnt know who out first president was. How can you even fathom that is a waste??? That is a pride all in its own. You must have someone supoorting you cuz you have no clue how IMPORTANT SCHOOL IS

In many ways it can be a waste of time i.e. I never cared about math classes and science classes because I never cared but business class and history class I loved so I did well in them…I’m not entirely sure how to feel about this post but there is a good book called I learned everything I need to know about life in kindergarden…I mean to be honest you will memorize things but a true intelligent person will want to learn not because they have to but because they want to.

You have said you loved history and buisness class.
If I ran your school you would do nothing but history and buisness.
And naturally you would teach yourself any other bits of math etc.
You need to succeed at your favorites.
Exactly…I do agree it seems that if we changed the school systems and let kids learn more about what they want to we would be more intelligent as a country and the drop out rate would decrease…if your a highschool kid and you don’t like something you can just ditch and not give a ****. If you want to succeed at anything in life the key is to keep people interested…

Ok so how about being a Dr.? How many subjects does a Dr. require? look it up and then tell me kids should only focus on certain things. Its all equal and kids should know all.
you would learn because you were self motivated.
Not because you were forced to do it.
MiaMags wrote:

If you want to be a Doctor go to medical school.

If your a doctor you specialize in certain things you have the basic knowledge but after that your either a doctor who can look at some one and give them medication…a plastic surgeon…brain surgeon…gynocology…kinseology etc…
Ok so why are kids being singled out just because of what they like? In this day and age kids should learn everything. The grammar school helps for the college. its not a waste of time. Kids when they are that young dont know what they want and kids change their mind ALL the time. So ya, let them focus on one subject, get bored with it when they are older and not know anything else but just that. Pretty stupid if you aks me

A doctor does not need to know how to write poetry.
Or fix cars.
Or learn about the Roman empire.
This is all a waste of time.
In grade six he should be taking apart human bodies.
We are singled out in everything, people discriminate on people for anything and everything. Plus the way the school system is set up kids in less “rich” schools don’t have a chance to have the same learning material as a kid that is in a more wealthy school. Once again only until last year about this time I finally actually began to want to learn and read books and I became a more intelligent thinker because I wanted to I had learned plenty in my days of highschool but it didn’t stick because i had no desire. Most of the time people will learn something because they want to and won’t get bored with it. Example look at fitness. If they get bored they still do what adults do now go back to school…

I knew when I was about 5 years old I wanted to be a scientist.
I am now an electrical engineer.
Many kids know or could be encourage to find out what they like.
Ok so if you focus on just one thing and that is just what you know, then have to go backf or something different, then what you didnt learn and only focused on was a waste of years

And it is pretty lazy that you will only have a child learn what they are interested in and what they know. you are not challenging a persons brain. New things happen all the time and they will need good judgement. School goes way beyond just topics and what you learn.
Typical why counties call em lazy, they are not willing to push themselves. We have evolved so far and now this generation stops and wont learn any further. Greed.
MiaMags wrote:

I don’t think you understand. Its not learning what they know, that would be even more pointless than school already is. Its learning what they need to know for what they are going for.
MiaMags wrote:

Schools are not interested in challenging a persons brain. Schools are interested in conditioning people to do mindless, repetitive work. People pass based on whether they did the work, regardless of how well they did it.
MiaMags wrote:

And school is the only place to get that kind of judgement?
MiaMags wrote:

But shouldn’t the material you learn be the entire point? I’d rather schools do a good job teaching the topics than try to be a mediocre ‘jack of all trades’ facility.

Counties? Which ones? And exactly who are them? People are willing to push themselves, but mainly if it’ll get them something in return.

There is a school out there that actually teaches you stuff - The Waldorf School - “education from a deeper perspective” - look it up, its pretty cool.
http://www.torontowaldorfschool.com/w…
Thats the one for my area, but they are everywhere.
And for the record - I really miss having a free education. I wish I could go back to high school and tell myself to pay attention.
Education is expensive.

Good on you.
waldorf school is very good.
A little too heavy into the arts but at least they try.
this is from them:
At TWS we plan every learning activity attending to its impact on mind, body and spirit. We understand each one affects the others and all engage in the learning process. Our lessons are an integration of listening, doing, thinking and speaking to deepen the learning for every student. Our teachers bring our curriculum to life, connecting numerous academic disciplines with hands-on experience to engage your child’s mind and heart in profound ways. Integration of subjects and methodologies and relevance to the real world are fundamental to our approach building academic excellence. Indeed, nearly 90% of all Waldorf High School graduates in North America attain a university degree; half go on to a Masters degree.
Hey I am unsubscribing. School has been the way it is for decades. And no I mean country, not countie.
You can argue all you want that school is the way it is but it will never change. try to make a difference.
Only decades? That is a very insignificant amount of time compared to how long humanity has existed. Saying that things are ‘just the way they are’ is willfully opposing progress.
MiaMags wrote:

Our evolution doesn’t stop when people start questioning the school systems. Our evolution stops when people simply accept things because that’s ‘just the way they are’. And apparently that is what you’ve decided to do.
I never decided to stop, I say keep our kids going to school and continue to do what they do. Others argue that kids should only learn one thing or drop out and just learn a trade. I have my opinions and they have theirs

Yes.
The American school system is in the gutters. What they are doing to us (students) is near criminal.
I can understand that for those students who wish to achieve higher education through College may see the benefits of going to school, but what about the rest of us? What if we really don’t want to go to College?
Shouldn’t the schools be teaching us some sort of trade in which we can utilize once we get out of school? What if I want to be a carpenter or an electrician? If schools are suppose to prepare for my future, then I demand a class (and I mean for all schools in the United States) that gives me these choices.
But no. Instead, I’m stuck having to take a class in which I don’t learn anything useful or even remotely interesting (AP United States History anyone?) and I am force-fed Shakespeare.
Do not misunderstand me. I think school’s are necessary. At the very least, I certainly don’t advocate dropping out of school and learning a trade. However, the current system has to be completely redone.

They do have schools of these. They are called tech or vocational schools. I went to one for health careers and now that is what I do. The way the school works is one full week of your trade and the following week, one full week of regular math, english, bio etc.. classes. Just switched between the two.
Which goes to show that even in trade schools, you still need that form of eduaction. People on here are saying that a student should only be taught what they want to learn. But as I stated before, that should not be, you should not single anyone out because what if, just what if, in the future someone decides to change their mind and they are stuck and not sure what they want to do because they were taught something that they “thought” they wantd to do young…That would be all they know and now you have someone starting allllll over again at the age of 30 having children to take care of and a husband.
And anyone here can disagree but if you think that they will change it so that kids will stop taking some english, sciences or bio….they won’t
Who posted this says that her son dropped out and is making tons of money doing some computer thing. NOT EVERYONE IS LIKE THAT. And not all will succeed. And the drop out rate begins because people encourage it.
Depends on the school. One school where I live locks the students in every day, when the fire alarm goes off, administrators must unlock the doors that lead outside. So that is a prison. Some seem like government paid baby sitting too. When I was in High School, some classes were baby sitting others were actually teaching me things.
Now that I am in college, I feel that I am wasting money to be watch.

Arkia I am going to site you for a Nobel Prize in education.
Good on you.
schools should encourage kids to think especially out side of the box.
Ask them questions that make them think.
e.g. Do you know that light is invisable?
Prove this.
What is the smallest size house you could live in?
Why do we throw away glass bottles when they can washed and reused 1000 times.
i see that a lot of people have commented on this.
sometimes a think school is a payed prison expect with more innocent people. but other times school really isn that bad.
School ISN’T a paid prison. What a melodramatic thought.
You are getting a FREE education, you are FREE to speak your mind. I really don’t see how they are paid prisons. Let’s try be SATISFIED and GRATEFUL.

Read my argument.
They’re force feeding us education that we do not WANT.
What if I don’t want to go to College?
What if, say for example, I wanted to be a plumber? Or an electrician? Or a carpenter?
Why is the school trying to force-feed me Shakesphere and advance Calculus when all I really want to learn how to do is fix pipes?
AND they take it a step further by making attendance MANDATORY. If anything, that alone probably is enough to say schools are payed prisons. Education is important, yes, but if one does not wish to have it, one should not be FORCED by law to attend it.

School is not free .. its like they milk you for every cent you have and you dont really learn all that much.

I’m sorry but that’s dumb. I’m not saying you’re dumb, you’ve just come to a dumb conclusion. We all do it sometimes. I see what your trying to say, in theory.
But I personally don’t want anymore ignorant uninformed people running around than there already are. Knowledge is the key to everything. You will end up no where, used and abused and steam rolled over if you think the world functions like this. Why would you want to deny yourself of free knowledge? A safe place to learn the fundamentals.
If you didn’t go to school, you wouldn’t know that you want to fix pipes and be a plumber. You wouldn’t even be able to choose anything else simply because you’d be an ignoramus by default. Not to mention all the interpersonal skills you learn by interacting with people at school.
You sound very ungrateful to me. Do you have any idea how lucky you are? You clearly have not met enough hardship or you wouldn’t be saying this.

School ISN’T a paid prison. What a melodramatic thought. You are getting a FREE education, you are FREE to speak your mind. I really don’t see how they are paid prisons. Let’s try be SATISFIED and GRATEFUL.
a free education?? umm.. since when is anything free in this country.. befor you know it they are going to start taxing every breath we take
School is not free .. its like they milk you for every cent you have and you dont really learn all that much.
Go to college, appropriate mounds of debt and then come back and talk to me about how high school isn’t free.
What are you scared of exactly? That your going to be brain washed?
You can clearly think for yourself so I wouldn’t worry about that.
With the cost of things going up and the prise of money down, people need to be good at something to get money. If you didnt go to school you wouldnt know how to read or write very well, because that would meen your parents and grandparents didnt go to school. People wouldnt be very smart and we would be living in the stone age with out smart humans.
he didn’t say all of school was a paid prison if you would of read up above in recent conversation…
going to school until a certain point like the 7th or 8th grade is fine. but beyond that you are pretty much either learning the same thing over again or you are learning stuff that you aren’t even going to use later on in your life
Depends on the school and who not what you want to be in the futur.
