Cancer help: My Life is a Roller coaster and It is spinning out of control. - Help.com

My Life is a Roller coaster and It is spinning out of control.

We’ve lost it all. Our car, home dreams and health have all been taken away. My parents live in Denver with my 14 y/o sister. I live in Orlando where I attend school. My dad was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor and has been hospitalized ever since. I flew the Denver a month after the diagnosis to support my family. and I could have never prepared myself for what I encountered. My dad is laying motionless in bed. his arms thinner than my own, his eyes sad and lost. He did not recognize me.I am sitting next to my sister who is finally asleep after weeks of sleepless nights in hospital rooms. Everything is silent, all i hear is my mom’s voice quietly singing for my dad. This letter is a desperate call. As I sit here and look at my family I realize there is nothing I can do to help them or myself and I feel powerless. My mom was forced to quit her job because my dad’s condition requires constant care. I was working on opening my own business but with all of our expenses all the money I had saved up is gone. My mom’s rent is due this month and so is mine but our bank accounts are empty. We’ve had to get help from church in order to buy food.I also have issues that I am trying to fight on my own. I have been battling an eating disorder for 9 years and I truly feel that I am spinning out of control. I have no money or health insurance to afford seeking help, It is also easy to feed an eating disorder when you really can’t afford to buy food. School is my only hope for the future, and I can only afford to go thanks to my financial aid. However, I received a letter today saying that my financial Aid for the fall term was denied. Today I feel broken. I am trying to pick up the pieces of what once was a happy life but they are everywhere and I don’t know where to start I don’t know what to do. Please Help us!

To thank you for taking the time to respond to my post a few minutes ago, I thought I would come here and see if I could offer any advice, but to be honest I am a complete loss.

I can not even begin to imagine how this is hitting you and your family. It just does not seem right. All I can really do is pray for you and your family. I really hope things improve.

Self-Sufficiency Grants

“Modest Needs makes Self-Sufficiency Grants by remitting payment to a creditor for an expense on behalf of an otherwise self-sufficient individual or family for a relatively small, emergency expense which the individual or family could not have anticipated or prepared for.

In making a Self-Sufficiency Grant, our goal is to prevent an otherwise self-sufficient individual or family from entering the cycle of poverty as a result of the financial burden posed by a relatively small emergency expense.

Any qualified individual living in the United States or Canada may apply for a Self-Sufficiency grant. The maximum grant available under this program is either $1,000.00 or an amount equal to the amount of your monthly rental or mortgage payment, whichever is greater.”

OK … that was the quick shotgun approach; it’s possible that you’ll find some redundancies and it’s also possible that you / your family may not qualify for all of the programs. But here’s a big tip: Keep calling around - if you get a “no” reply from any particular agency in a specific location, call them again at an alternate location.

Also: immediately contact all of your mom’s utility companies. She might qualify for any reduced rate programs that they’re offering to lower income families.

Regarding your eating disorder:

Browse the above site. You’ll find not only hotlines but also articles, forums, on-line meetings and chats.

Finally, my sincere sympathies for what you and your family are currently enduring. I sincerely wish you better days ahead. -Aries.

I am sorry you are going through a tuff time. Maybe you should look for a part time job. Go talk to financial aide and find out why you were denied and go from there.
