I recently got prescribed Ultram, is it possible this medication can make you feel depressed when your not taking it?

This isn’t my post, but I thought others could benefit from it and didn’t want to see it deleted so I went ahead and claimed it. If there is a doctor out there who could comment on it, I think it would be really helpful.

Yes. The withdrawl from any narcotic-like pain reliever has the potential of causing depression.

Are you on any other medications? How long have you taken Ultram and in what dose?

I’m not a doctor, so you should really speak to your doctor but, if you have a fragile system, this could easily lead to a mild depression. The best thing you can do for yourself is to stay active. Motion creates emotion. If you are suffering from strong depression, it may be a good idea for you to be on an aminoketone class antidepressant such as welbutrin while you ween from Ultram

I’ve been on Paxil and Lexapro before, so yeah I guess you could say I’ve been depressed before, but then I got off of them and have been better, until now. I started taking the Tramadol because of a pulled muscle in my neck and another one in my back. Now I’m taking 400 mgs a day and when I don’t take it I feel so paranoid and sad its pathetic.

ouch, bad places for a pulled muscle. You need to ween off slowly. There are a lot of withdrawls associated with that type of dossage. You should cut back slowly over time and, like I said, talk to the doc about an antidepressant. This isn’t going to be easy on you if you are prone to depression, but you can do it. You’ve beaten it before, so you can beat it again.

Oh and I understand completely what you was saying about exercising. That’s how I overcame my old depression and panic attacks. I exercised by running so much that I lost 55 lbs. over a 3 month span.

Dang, hope you didn’t start out underweight.

I’ve also found that any activity (even those not thought to be exercize) tend to help. Simple things like going to museums or concerts, Gardening, working on cars or even bird watching can help. Anything other than sitting around the house staring at the TV or computer (with exception to help.com of course). How is your back and neck now? I would imagine, if it’s been a month, they are mostly healed up, right? Then it is definitely time to stay as active as possible.

You’ll be fine. I’m jumping off for the night, but I’m sure I’ll see ya around if you stick with our little funfest. You should get verified. Just go to the email you received from help.com and follow the instructions. I look forward to seeing you around.

Yes, that is one of the withdrawl effects. You may want to talk to your doctor about tapering you off.
