Computers help: I’m a computer programmer. - Help.com

I’m a computer programmer.

Scratch that, I’m a talented computer programmer. And I’ve been working for a really nice company, under really nice bosses, with really nice people, who have made the company into more like a family. Which is nice in some ways. Unfortunately, like a family the company gets more dysfunctional the more I stay on it.

Anyways, I’ve been designated the guy to convert the internet site from one language to another. The problem is that the person who originally designed and programmed the site went insane (literally Paranoid Schitzophrenic) before I got there, so nobody knows how the site works. Meaning that my job is impossible to begin with.

Basically:
I’m re-writing a gigantic 22000 line 190 file project, ALONE, and the few brief assignments I’ve been able to shift onto other people have come back FULL OF BUGS, and that every single section of the site has been designed and programmed COMPLETELY differently, so I have to learn a new system for every section (of which there are four), and things that I thought had been completely finished have gotten “lost”, so now have to be re-done, OR I have to track down the other guy who was doing it and get the stuff off them, but EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE COMPANY WHO IS A PROGRAMMER
EXCEPT ME
has been on VACATION for the past while, or is GOING on vacation for the next while
AND
I’ve been working on this project for the past 9 months, getting next to nowhere, WITHOUT a BREAK, so I’m completely BURNED OUT, and getting JUST A LITTLE BIT STRESSED OUT.

My boss just quit, with nobody knowing the majority of the stuff he does around here (he’ll still be around to train whoever comes next, but still).

I was unable to get ANY work done today. I couldn’t even look at the computer monitor. I have spent the last hour curled up into a fetal ball underneath my desk. Nobody has noticed because nobody comes into the office.

HELP!

Have you tried googling the information or the programs that you actually need? The job you have can be a daunting job for anyone, even an expert. I feel for you!

Ohhhhhhhhh yes. I have tried lots. I have done lots. I’ve googled from here to there and back again. At first it was a simple search+replace, then it was slightly more complicated, now it’s essentially: I have to read the program in one language and understand it, then implement as close as possible to the same thing with the other language. The languages are Actionscript 2.0 and Actionscript 3.0. I have found many helpful resources, but the site is so gigantically complex that most of them aren’t useful enough.

Ideally the site should have just been redone from scratch, but I’m nine months into this already.

I’ve been handling the programming side of it for 8 months so far, with little problems, but it’s really really REALLY REALLY STARTING to stress me out. I’m burned out from all the programming, I’m stressed out from unpredictable pay and weird tax stuff (apparently I’m a contractor not an employee), and I’m way too worked up right now to do any work. It’s just stress stress stress, MY boss has left, but his boss hasn’t, and his boss has NO CLUE about computers, programming, etc.

I haven’t been sleeping well on the weekdays. I suspect it’s because I stay up really late not wanting to go to sleeep because if I go to sleep I’ll have to get up and go to work.

I’m burned out. I can’t bring myself to look at the code. I feel desperate, panicked, and low (like gravity is 2x normal).

Not really sure why I’m posting here, just feeling REALLY really stressed and crazy, and twitchy.

(Disclaimer: I’m nowhere near suicidal or anything like that. I’m not a health risk to myself or others. I am very worked up and very stressed. (This isn’t the same account that I posted the original message on, rather it’s an anonymous one I created for the purposes of furthering anonymous discussion.))

Current plan: get paid up and leave (possibly temporarially possibly not, we’ll see.)

So you ended up with this assignment because the other programmer flew over the cuckoo’s nest and your boss quit?

No, I ended up with this assignment because I was unassigned when the job came up so my boss asked me to do it, and I said I’d take it on, and because I was a talented programmer who had solid experience with AS3.

Well, actually, I guess you’re right: I ended up in my current position/predicament because the other programmer(s) flew the nest and my boss quit.

And because I kept thinking I had the whole site understood. Then I’d find another section of the site that I didn’t know existed, and have to start understanding it all over again.
