I can’t find a job, should I do volunteer work instead?

I have no work experience and no job references. Finding a job seems to be impossible. I was thinking maybe I could do some volunteer work in order to build up my resume, but I don’t know what kind to do. In order to volunteer in an area of my expertise, I need relevant work experience!

Voluntary work is a great way of gaining experience. We recently took someone on who had gained experience in the voluntary sector - so it can be done!

Does it matter what kind of volunteer work that I do?

It very much depends on what sort of work you are looking for, but it looks great on a CV and is a better seller than not doing anything at all. Employers love to see voluntary work from any prospective employee; it shows a willingness to work and a great amount of dedication.
