My very good friend has been struggling with depression for a few years now.

She has been struggling with self-abuse and eating disorders, and she cannot seem to control herself. After convincing her to stop, she has gotten over the eating disorder fully now, but she still hurts herself. She had a traumatic life experience when she was younger, and she says that it has ruined her life. I have talked to her multiple times about her situation, yet nothing seems to help.
I have given her other, healthier methods (ex: hobbies, youth groups, even just lightly snapping a rubber band on her wrist instead of hurting herself critically) to get her mind off of depressing thoughts. It worked for a while but now she is seeming detatched again. She also tends to overreact about many things and is very easily upset.
What can I do?
Please give any suggestions. Anything would be much appriciated.
Thanks

Get her to a Higher Power. Like a psychiatrist. Tell her parents. Etc.

my situation is very similar to your friends.i think shes very lucky to have a friend like you by her side.i agree that you should help her get some kind of counseling.one of the best things you can do is just be by her side.

try meditation.
For people struggling with severe depression, practicing meditation may offer mood-lifting benefits.
Even in the most severe cases, depression is a highly treatable disorder. While it’s critical to work with a physician in treating depression, certain self-care strategies—such as exercising regularly, practicing yoga, and using nutritional therapy—may produce mood-improving effects and ease depression symptoms.

I understand that what is happening is very hard for u right now im but by being there for her right now is very good. You might not be able to change her but at least so knows she has you. Maybe you should look up a psychiatrist just to see if maybe if it’ll help, if not just keep telling her you love her and be there for her. I hope things get better for her and you.

forgive me i have know knowledge of your freinds “terms” and may be im obsessed with clay pidgieon shooting but why dont you take her to clay pidgieon shooting and get her to think of the clays as being what ever it is that has upset her? and why not try and set up a type of rewards system like if she dont hurt herself she gets to go paint balling or summat like that? does this help?

thats tough ive been in that situation….
theres not always much you can do but show them that there is light at the end of the tunnel and i would definitely have her talk to a therapist.
