life help: I am at a fork in the road. - Help.com

I am at a fork in the road.

I’m partway through a psychology degree, but for several reasons I applied to switch into an arts degree majoring in psychology and philosophy. I received a letter today offering me a place in the arts degree.

I don’t know what to do though. Assuming I get the credit for the subjects I’ve already done, I should finish the arts degree at the same time I would have finished the psych degree. But to find out if I get the credit, I have to accept the arts offer and then apply for it.

I don’t know what I’d do with an arts degree. My boyfriend keeps saying I don’t really HAVE to do anything with it, but it feels kind of useless to do a uni degree and then not use it for anything.

Becoming a psychologist doesn’t appeal to me as much as it did when I first chose the degree - because I’ve learned about what’s actually involved.

I’m worried that I’m backing out of my psych degree because I’ve been feeling horribly depressed lately, which makes me completely uninterested in everything and feel like an occupation like that is way, way out of my league. I’ve been thinking that since about the end of first year - but I’ve been depressed since before then, so I don’t know.

Mostly I’m worried about revealing to my parents that I’ve changed my degree again. I changed from Creative Arts (which was kind of an arts/business degree) to psychology, and now am thinking of arts. Mother will freak out because it’s a “useless” degree and she has her heart set on me becoming a psychologist. Dad will worry about the financial aspects of things, and will probably be more accepting, but I don’t know exactly how he’ll react. I also told them previously that I wouldn’t change my degree again.

Ehhhh I don’t know what to do. I need to make my decision within ten days, or the offer expires. I should’ve decided ages ago.

There is plenty you can go into with an art degree, graphic design, interior design, clothes design, car design, well you could pretty much go on to design something you love and feel passionatly about,

Hi, i can propose you an exercise that will help you to decide your way. If your are interested to spend some time every day for the next 10 days, you should feel better about your decision. OK, here it is.

Go on Google and search for “Hu song”, take the first link and read, listen and try it for 15 to 20 min per day. It work best when you do that with a feeling of love for somebody or something that you love to do.

Best of luck

Thanks for your opinions everyone.

It’s an arts degree, not an art degree - it means it’s pretty much a general uni degree that can be customised. In this case, my majors are psych and philosophy, so the degree is centred around those, but I don’t have to meet the APS requirements that I’d have to meet to successfully complete a straight psych degree.

I’ve broken the news to my parents, and am receiving the expected questions: “But what are you going to DO with this degree? What career will you go into?”

This is probably a stupid question. I’d already enrolled in second semester classes before I applied to switch degrees. If I accept the offer to go into the arts degree, will I lose my enrolments in those classes?
