I went to Cuba a few years ago and I have to say I loved it. Got talking to one guy who worked there who told me he was in the army for a few years before being designated a sector he could work in and he actually thought it was a positive experience.
Yeh, I’ve never been. But it’s been a huge area of research for me over the last few years. Most of the Cubans I have spoke to are incredibly proud to be Cuban.
I’m very interested by the fact you went to Cuba… If you have anything else to say about it - I’d love to hear.
It was amazing, two weeks in Guadalavaca which is a primarily tourist destination but we ventured out to Havana and to some other places (names of which escape me as this was a few years ago now), it was absolutely beautiful. We went over Christmas/New Year and a Father Christmas came up on the beach on a jet ski giving out traditional Cuban toys to all of the kids which I thought was a really nice touch.
To be honest I was 15 at the time and didn’t spend much time doing the more cultural stuff that I’m into now, I quickly befriended another English girl and being that we had both been mistaken for over 18 in the reception and given adult bands, we spent much of the time getting very drunk on the most delicious Rum based cocktails you will ever try, swimming, going to the ‘discoteque’ and having a wild time. If I remember right we played quite a lot of tennis too and had some interesting times in the jacuzzi’s they had dotted around the place and got chatted up by alot of guys! Including quite a few of the holiday reps which was quite fun really. We got on so well that the next summer I went to Greece with her and her family.
If you ask me direct questions I’ll probably be able to remember more but that is what strikes me when I just think about it generally. Oh and the way that in Mexico you get stopped alot by street traders and people trying to sell you all sorts whereas in Cuba that didn’t really happen at all. Out of Cuba, Mexico and the Isla de Margerita which is an island of the coast of Venezuela, I’d defiantely rate Cuba highest and I do hope to go there again someday.
Theres obviously a number of faults, limits on plurality etc. but on the whole its a positive view. The main thing to bear in mind is imagine what it would be like had the revolution never happened. The illitracy rate is practically at zero, cuban healthcare is widely regarded to be some of the most advanced amongst developing nations in spite of the fact they lack access to perscription medicines. Their economy has weathered the embargo suprisingly well and as time has gone on theyve progressively eased some of their earlier conservative barriers, e.g. persecution of homosexuals etc.
All of these facts and many more wouldnt have happened without the revolution

Yes, I definately agree. The actual growth of Cuba since the 60’s is absolutely amazing considering the hit that the American Embargo had on them. I’m really glad to hear the first two comments on Cuba are overall quite positive. That was quite unexpected :)!
Thanks for the replies :)
Oh yeah, by the way, I’m with you on the mushrooms, but how can you hate marmite?!? They had marmite in Cuba :D And would make you fresh omelettes with ANYTHING you liked in them. My bro chose chocolate chips one day, fail. Lol.
LOL Choc Chip omelettes? That’s ambitious hahah. Marmite - Never tried it, but it’s clearly pure evil. ahah.

Never tried it? How can you hate it if you’ve never tried it lol. Starbucks do a Cheest and Marmite breakfast pannini which is to die for. Delicious.
Haha. I know - not the most educated of opinions I realise, I just like *know*. ahah.
*cheese rather
Lol you’re crazy, marmite is yummy. Bovril is puke.
Lo unico que me gusta de Cuba es la Salsa Cubana y su estilo de baile, despues de ahi no me lo encuentron un pais extraordinario.
as with other nations around the world outside interference to keep cuba in the dark ages has failed miserably, and they are prospering out performing the world in many areas, good on them, propaganda failed miserably tring to convince the world, what an evil place this is,it cant and never will fool all the people all of the time, cubans are some of the nicest people in the world, allthough all of them have the right to be bitter, you don,t seem to see this, quite the opposite if anything, embargos do not work just slows things down , lets convine them along with w/m/d s to history, dialoque not war must be the way forward, would you agree
