hi, i would really appreciate an opinion on this- i’m a 20 yr old student.

there is this car i want to buy. it is £3,500 and i have saved the money to pay for it, but my mum said she doesn’t mind insuring it as long as i pay for petrol, tax and servicing etc.

my dad, however, says he doesn’t want me to buy the car because he thinks they would end up paying for stuff that went wrong with it i couldn’t afford to. he may be right, but i think if i can’t pay for it i just won’t drive it. he says we live beyond our means etc. so i shouldn’t get it.

my mum thinks i’m old enough to be making my own decisions, but i feel like because im not earning my own money i don’t have the right to make it.

should i buy it? thank you.

Well it’s your money so I don’t see why not. Saving up that kind of dosh when you’re a student is no easy task, so they can’t say you’re not serious about this. Why do you need a car though? The majority of people I know at uni don’t bother with one because it’s just an unnecessary expense at uni. You might be better off continuing to save money and get a better car when you graduate.

find a cheaper car and with the money you saved spend it on the things that go wrong with it

that’s the thing, i don’t really need a car. my family just moved into a village so i would like one for some independence so i don’t have to keep asking for lifts, and it would be good to be able to get around at uni too.

but i don’t like the idea that i am just spoilt and want my own way when i don’t neeed one. which may be the case- i am bad at self-reflection. it is my money, but it is also theirs due to insurance..

My solution to this was just to buy a bicycle - it’s cheaper, running costs are much lower and parking’s free and easy to find just about anywhere, plus it keeps me fit into the bargain. Maybe that’d be a better option for you while you’re at uni.

Heh, yeah, some drivers are ****s when it comes to cyclists, though it depends a lot on where you live - some cities are a lot more cycle-friendly than others!
