I have a bad anxiety problem when I drive.

See, I was supposed to take my driving test back in February, but I got sick during the week I was supposed to take it, and since then, never have even driven a vehicle, yet I’m supposed to take my driving test tomorrow. I’m decent in every facet of driving. . . EXCEPT changing lanes. I am absolutely terrified of changing lanes. It’s a lot to process, and I know it will eventually become second nature to me as I drive more, but I’m always losing momentum on the accelerator and I’m losing speed when I let off the gas to get to the other lane, and if I don’t do that, I’m always making shifty moves to the other lane (I mean it’s not a smooth transition). Not to mention I feel this unnatural fear when I’m on the highway and there’s cars behind me and next to me. How can I get over this fear? Wait, that’s a rhetorical question (drive more?) What I mean is, what kind of mindset can I carry into tomorrow morning from 11 to 1 (the time I take my test)?

I feel that way too on the highway and what i do is stay in the slow lane, and I don’t drive on unfamiliar parts of the highway during busy hours if I can help it. I think just practice changing lanes and make sure you eat before driving, I find low blood sugar makes it worse for me.

Practicing more will reduce fear.

Thanks! I’ll try to eat a good meal tomorrow morning before leaving.

I may be wrong but driving tests are not usually on major roads. You can take the test as often as you need to so don’t stress just do your best.

I’m taking the test via driving at the community college here, and the very first thing I have to do when driving out of the lot is get on the good ‘ol highway. I think he said back in January/February that I only get two chances when taking the test, but I hope I’m wrong. Then again, I’m counting on passing the test tomorrow, with a little bit of luck on my side with some added confidence.

You’re going to need a confident mindset. In case you were not aware, many people who drive extremely prudent are the same people that rarely encounter collisions. You’ll be fine. I can be the same way when I’m sitting behind the wheel of my car. Although, I work for a company that nearly requires an impeccable driving record since we’re obligated to drive on a regular basis. The worst fear for any conscientious driver is the thought of somebody else making a foolish mistake and costing you permanent injuries, or even your life.
