I have worked in the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities field for about 20 years.
25% of that time was spent working in various Psychiatric Hospitals with children and teens. Now the State facility, in Nashville, Tennessee, where I am a Developmental Tech Supervisor, working with adults with developmental disabilities, is probably going to close soon. After I married 20 years ago I started going to college, with the assistance of student loans, racked up 90+ semester hours at MTSU in Murfreesboro,TN. About 10 years ago had to drop out due to health issues involving my wife and our youngest child. I was informed that I would have to repay the student loans before re-entering college. We have been trying to pay back as much as possible but at this rate I will probably be retirement age before the loans are paid off. Subsequently my dream of being the first in my family to obtain a college degree has fallen by the wayside. I feel like my calling is serving people with special needs. So, now what do I do?
