“A Summer’s Raindrop - The Story of a Droplet”
Soaring high above,
Higher than any tree
In this vast sky, silent and cold
A vague vapour begins to take hold
Aqua essence, blood of life,
Swirling together, hatching a plot,
High above, these rebels conspire,
And take formation; disparate squad.
Trees far below heave and respire,
Adding new troops to the fold,
Higher and higher to the cold
Vapours to wisp, wisp to smoke.
Smoke without fire, no holy pyre.
A rising smoke that will not choke.
Climbs ever higher.
And forms a cloud, to sag and heave,
A floating lung that cannot breath.
Full of water, it begins to moan
A heavy burden is bourne alone.
And by some benign soaring presence,
Our hero starts to condense.
Miracle erupts with great magnificence
Atoms of water swirl together
In secret quantum dance,
Forces collide creating weather
And for the plants this is their chance,
These dry, scorched and petrified shoots,
Strain ever upwards, tugging at their roots.
Fingers straining towards the sky
Scorching sun has wrought earth dry.
A thousand plants, who cannot shout.
Their life held at the mercy of a cloud.
One rogue wind, disaster would spell.
Slightest shift of Nature’s shroud
Could force fauna to another day of hell.
Of another day with a drink,
I care not to think.
But wait, wind has passed.
Giver of life – Mighty Cumulus.
Stands in place, set to last.
Sky darkens, across the land a shadow forms.
Signs of true beauty – a summer storm.
Amber sun sets beneath the land,
A hasty retreat from the battlefield.
Cows stand and crops demand.
All prepare for Nature’s yield!
They are ready, stage is set
Lines rehearsed, actors in the wings
Heads turn skyward for the show.
Clap of thunder announces proceedings.
One solitary raindrop must be first to go
Leave his brothers and abandon high home
Start a journey with no bend
Our first brave droplet is alone,
Hurtling downwards to his end
Lonely raindrop down must fall,
Narrowly passing plane and bird,
Earth rises upwards, solid in all
This silent journey is never heard.
And gravity has won the dispute,
Pulling Water back to land.
Her flight was brief but she is resolute.
To earth she has been brought.
And though this battle has been fought
Water shall not falter
In her quest to ascend
To the plains high above.
And it is for such unshakable determination
That I admire majestic precipitation.
