Im a senior in highschool and my boyfriend is going to college 3 hours away.

I want to break up with him cause I know a long distance relationship won’t work for us. He is leaving at the end of august. I don’t know when I should break up with him. Should I do it before he leaves so he has time to get over it before he leaves or should I wait till he is there so he will have a lot of things to keep it off his mind. I don’t want to hurt him. I just want him to understand where I’m coming from.
