I need to know the setting and how it affects the story

Well the author who is the main character ends up going back to the middle ages. I believe around the 10 or 11 century. Every thing is so primitive compared to the late 1800/ early 1900 where the aurthor is from. At the beginning of the story they want to burn Twain because to save his own hide from becoming a slave be says that he is a sorccorer who will conjure the sun to become black (meaning a solar eclipse because they were due for one) A lot of it has to do with rank and nobility and the advanced ideas twain brings to the medival times that that era wasnt readyto accept.
