Money help: My family and I are drowning in bills of all types, and are close to losing everything we have worked so hard for. - Help.com

My family and I are drowning in bills of all types, and are close to losing everything we have worked so hard for.

It started in 2005 when I lost my job and we fell behind in medical bills. By Gods grace I was given another, even better position, but we had already fallen behind. That company then relocated, leaving me out of work only until recently. When I went back to work, my wife lost her job. My wife also had many medical problems, but again by God’s grace we now have a son, who is not quite a year old yet. This baby is a miracle, as we were given a less than 2% chance of ever having a baby. He is happy and healthy! The problem is now I fear for his future. We are just under $70,000 in debt - and we cannot continue to pay it off. Part of it is because a disgruntled ex co-worker stole my ID and ran up cell phone bills and other stuff. The problem is he lives in another country and although my former employer did everything they could to help, there is nothing further we can do. I am stuck with that as well which ruined my once perfect credit. Up until recently I was very proud to pay my bills on time and responsibly - something I can no longer do. I am seeking any help I can get - money, prayer, anything! I would be so thankful for any assistance, as would my family, and my son. I know there are probably many stories out there like mine or worse than mine. I pray someone will be able to help.

Starting over financially may be your best bet. That means looking into bankruptcy.

I will send you prayers. That’s all I can send you.

Unfortunately most of the people here at help.com are so poor we cannot pay attention. Good luck!

Thanks - especially for the prayers! I have begun debt settlement as opposed to bankruptcy, however we may need to move to that next step. I know that I needed to take some steps to try to help us as best as I could.

Make sure the debt settlement people are legitimate. Many of those people aren’t interested in helping you; they just want to be involved in collecting on your interest. You may find yourself worse off in the long run.

There is nothing wrong with bankruptcy for someone in your position. Your credit is already bad and the bankruptcy will allow you to start building your life back up right away. Rather than struggle to get det free only to find that your credit is still bad even after all that struggling.
