Sometimes I don’t feel like there is a god.

If there is then why does he let so much bad happen. Why does he let people get sick, or live in poverty. Why does he let the rich take advantage of the poor. When I prayed why didn’t he answer. My life is going down hill and no one seems to care.

Sometimes the best God can do is not answer your prayers because there are better things for you ahead. Unanswered prayers are sometimes the way God is telling you to keep on trying yourself and you yourself will find a way.

I think our mistake is in assuming that we can narrowly define the nature of God. An elderly super-human giving out favors to those who beg or limit their imaginations is not even a poor reflection of what or who God should be, it’s a vulgar distortion. When and if you pray or meditate, maybe you would be better off not asking for anything, but just centering and calming your mind.

The answers to your problems may or may not end with a divine being who relates on a personal level, but they begin with you.

you have to pray on it and your prayer might have not been answered if it was against his will

At the age of 50 I’ve prayed enough to understand that this is a rationalization. If you get what you pray for, people say it was God’s will. If you don’t, people say it wasn’t God’s will. If good things happen they say it was God’s blessing. But if bad things happen, they say it isn’t God’s fault and that he gives us free will. That sort of thinking is the most evasive, dishonest kind of reasoning (and I say that as someone who still has some faith). You can’t have it both ways. In my opinion, either God isn’t as powerful (yet) as you believe, or not as good, kind and fair as you believe. To me, the realities of life and validity of science contradict the notion that God is in complete control. If there is a God, he/she/it is only now beginning to gain consciousness in the form of the Universe. We humans are only the minutia inside the cells (galaxies or universes) of a being who is yet to see the light of day. Or it could be that God is an angry, pissed-off old man who delights in blood, and who chooses favorites arbitrarily and condemns others to unending torture, like the Bible says. No one knows, of course, especially those who are absolutely sure that he’s an old fart in a robe, and those who think he’s just superstition. The more certain one becomes that their own concept is inerrant (whether belief or non-belief), the farther they get from living harmoniously with others.
