How can I prove I did not send an email?

Please help.

a friend of mine recently had a private email that he sent me a long time ago forwarded to his mother. the email came from his email address to his mother’s. my email address was visible as the address the email was originally sent to. even though it was not sent from my email my friend is very angry and believes I forwarded the email. is there a way to prove I had nothing to do with the email being forwarded? please help, thank you.

Are you looking for answers about problems with your AOL service?

I’d like to recommend that you ask AOL directly since they are best suited to help you.

For AOL support, you can visit the AOL support site or even call them at an AOL toll free number.

The email should show who it was sent by. Your email address is showing as the email was forwarded so it will show who it was sent to originally within the email itself. This does not mean it was forwarded by you.

Every email has a long list of tracking info. You basically want to see the “header” on the email that the mother received. Adjust her email program to see that header. Save the email as a plaintext file and the long header may show up. You will see the whole path of where it came from.

I am fairly certain that all technical data, even after it is deleted, is stored both on your computer and is available through the internet provider services. However, reclaiming this data once it is old is very hard and takes someone who is tech savvy. I know that even in cases of old IM’s and chat’s and emails, if needed they can be recovered and read by outside authorities. So yes, there must be some way to get your information.

The only problem is that usually internet or e-mail providers will not take the time to find that information unless they absolutely have to - like in major situations. You could try calling your e-mail provider and seeing who you need to contact to uncover this information.

Or, if you know any major techies who are your friends you could ask them to find the information too. That is all I can think of. Good luck!

If someone created an email address with all of my information, is there any way to prove I did not create it?
