I was in the Navy and discharged with an OTH 2 years ago.

I was discharged 5 DAYS before my end of enlistment. Ive recently decided to join the Police Academy and would before hand like to send an application to the Discharge Review Board. Id also like to know if Im still eligible for the G.I bill? ANY feedback or help would be appriciated. I have a good paying job for a well known company, so for people that think that it will ruin your life, it wont. BUT being a police officer is my dream and I need Help. Thank you in advance.

Was the OTH for something really bad? Did you hit somebody or steal something?

Actually i saw someone steal something and didnt inform anyone about it. I was given the same discharge as that person. (i think) It all happened so fast. Im requesting a copy of my records and Im hiring a lawyer to review it for me.

Is there a big explanation on your record to that effect?

Sometimes the cops hiring look at your recent record and maybe what kind of record you had up until th time you were discharged. However, you have to be ready with a plausible explanation to the board or whoever is doing the hiring. Sometimes, if they read through the lines of your record they can see that you were probably railroaded for somebody else and they even take you under their wings. However, when you are explaining this in person, make sure you look at them in the eye so they can see how sincere you are with your explanation. A buddy of mine in the Air Force did that and was actually hired by the Sheriff’s department. However, everytime he goes up for promotion, he has to explain himself and he always gives the same direct explanation that he gave when he got hired.

Actually im not sure exactly what is on my record. I feel as though I was “coached/forced ” to not appeal during this incident. Do you happen to know anything about whether Im entitled to the GI bill?

OTH does not prohibit you from applying for the GI bill, however they do it on a case by case review as long as you did not kill anybody, I believe you are elegible for it but when my buddy applied, they did it for him like that. I really don’t know whether my friend applied or not. When you apply, it will say on the application.

I meant to say, I really don’t know whether my friend QUALIFIED or not.
