So I have depression and therapy isn’t working what next?

After some hard times in college (first year in college, death of a loved one, a bad breakup, and medical issues that made for a less than stellar track season) the doctor told me that I have depression with a side of anxiety. So I went ot therapy and I tried to make it work I did everything they told me to but every time I came out of there I felt worse. I am not suicidal but I am having a hard time finding the joy in life that I used to. What do I do now?

Eat some plls… therapy is fine but anti-anxiety medications make you feel better fast.

anxiety –> passivity –> victim –> regrets –> depression –> focus on past

The cure is making plans for the future, taking action whenever you feel down or anxious, and focusing on achieving little goals every day even tiny ones like doing the laundry, getting your hair cut. Work your way up to joining biking/swimming/running clubs. Running a 5K race. Doing a half marathon. Biking 360km. Going to social groups.

Action and plans and future give you HOPE. and hope is the only medication for depression and anxiety. And action is the way you get it.

Grey skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face…. and spread sunshine all over the place, just put in a happy face.

Sorry to hear of your recent unfortunate track record. I have found some but little success with therapy and the medication only takes care of half of the problem. Medication won’t suddenly bring a loved one back to life or fix a broken car, or relationship. I have personally had the most success with fostering a healthy spiritual life. This helped me to change my way of thinking from a negative one to a more positive one. It gives me different ways or perspectives to look at life itself.

I am not advocating a particular religion although I do have several influences. Through a spiritual life I was able to see the big picture. In some cases there is not much we can do to change a bad situation, but we can change our thinking about the bad situation. This helps ease the torment.

To simply say, “Be Happy!” Is easier said than done for a depressed individual. I invite you to visit my blog. http://thoughthope.wordpress.com/ If you are interested in exploring this possible solution to your problem. Here are just a few suggestions from my blog:

Do something nice for someone.

Look for things to be grateful for.

It is OK to indulge and do something you enjoy. Activity distracts the mind.

Let go of expectations. This will set you up for the big let down. Expect nothing. Let go of your desire for specific results or outcomes. Merely observe them.

These are just a few things to ponder. I hope some of this helps.

there are heaps of different types of therapy, not all of them work for everyone. so i would suggest shopping around, making a few appointments with a few different people and seeing if any of them click. if they dont, its not your fault, its just the way therapy goes.
therapy combined with medication is the best way to go, but they can both take a bit to get the right fit. kinda like shoes.
