Family help: I’m bisexual, but I don’t know how to tell my family. - Help.com

I’m bisexual, but I don’t know how to tell my family.

I am a fourteen year old male and I don’t know how to tell my family that I am bi. Most of my friends know, but I’m not really “out”. I have a very trustworthy group of friends.
My mother is a lesbian, so she will probably be fine with it, but my brothers are just jackasses. My dad would act like he’s fine with it, just to avoid starting something.
One of my brothers is an alcoholic with schizcophrenia, not a good mix. He also is highly opionated towards homosexuallity / bisexuallity. My other brother would crack alot of jokes, but he might admire my openness about it.

So my question is, should I tell them, and if so how?

I say just be straight forward and go for it! You are still you and they are your family! More or less your just going to put bad thoughts into your mind and make yourself never want to tell them. They should know so… go for it!

I agree, you should just tell them straight up. They are your family, if you are close to your brothers they should be okay with it. Because no matter what gender your into you are still yourself they should accept you for who you are

I’ve tried before, but I didn’t have the guts for it. How should I tell them though? My dad lives 80 miles away anyway. I can’t exactly tell my parents at the same time. I wouldn’t want to have to go through it more than once. It was hard enough telling my best friend. I’m surprised my mum hasn’t guessed yet though. I’ve already had discussions with her about wanting a purple streak in my hair and a lip piercing. I also hinted at it, I asked her how she would react… I don’t want everyone at my school to know either. Some of my friends came out and they get bullied almost every day.

Check out FFLAG(families and friends of lesbian and gays (bi included)) It has a lot about coming out and possibilities of how they may react. My “coming out” story is a little.. rough because my “christian” friend who i told the situation to and told her not to tell my parents if she noticed me and another girl holding hands in the hallway or anything……told my mom. She believed it was the right thing to do then my mom called my neighbor who called my dad to tell him the situation and my dad decided he was okay with it, but my mom was not. My mother never confronted me about it and is probably just ignoring me and my father confronted me and told me he doesn’t care. although i don’t like people doing the dirty stuff for me it was nice to not be the one who had to absorb the initial shocks of it.

I think you should start with your mother, and then move to the next most accepting.

Tell them only if you really feel you should. Its never good to have secrets in a family but with your brothers it might be better–at least with the opinionated one..and maybe the alcoholic to let it resurface later.

Good Luck!

My friend came out awhile back and he just told his mother who later told his dad. They were just fine with it and his mom also suspected he was. For the bullies out there. Dont let them get you down. Words are just words and they cant really hurt you in the end of it all.

I’m bi too and I have not told anyone. I should tell you that if your dependent on your parent, don’t tell them! But if you date a girl, you have to make sure she is ok with it.

P.S. I’m 13 and found out Im bi a few days ago. I consider telling my parents
