Random acts of kindness

yassengregorovitch posted something about this earlier but then closed the post. I thought it was a really good idea though, so I thought I’d get the conversation started again. Have you ever had someone do something nice for you randomly? Or have you ever decided randomly to do something for someone else? Stories/thoughts please!

I used to buy bags of burgers for folks on the street who had those “will work for food” signs. I always felt good about the ones I did it for… I didn’t, at the time, have any real money or ability to hire them or help them in another way. Five bucks was about all I had, but I didn’t just want to give them cash.

Maybe it feels too much like bragging to say something like this, but I tried to help.

Not bragging at all - I asked for stories :)

I was walking to the station (up a very steep hill) once in the pouring rain, and I paused under a bridge to get my breath back, and a guy crossed the street to offer me a cigarette. I don’t smoke, but the fact that he was willing to go out of his way put a smile on my face :)

You know I don’t remember a time when somebody did something nice for me randomly. :/ That’s pretty sad. At least a stranger anyway, that’s what you’re after, right?
I’ve done plenty of things for random people. Helped older people onto their seats on buses, helped women with prams get onto buses, I once gave two kids £2 so they could get a bus tickket because they lost their all day passes, wow… lots of bus stories it seems, lol!
I’ve also given a homeless guy a cheeseburger,
Tipped a saxophone busker £10,
Helped a middle aged woman chase down her dog that got free,
Sent my friend who I hadn’t seen or spoken to in ages a bouqet of flowers when her sister passed away (she lives in Australia and I’m in the UK)
Pretty sure there’s more but that’s all I can remember for now.

Wow, that’s quite a list! It can be strangers or friends, it doesn’t matter.

Once, I was at the park (I was about 16) and this gang of teenage boys was tormenting a squirrel– throwing pinecones & whatever they could find, at it. It was so terrified, and they were totally going to kill it. I ran up to them and yelled at them, said “Shame on you” and the squirrel got away, the boys ran off.

Afterwards, I thought of how stupid it was cuz they could totally have turned on me, instead. They were in that “mob” mode, you know? But I couldn’t stand to see them do that, and it was just MEAN. Random acts of kindness don’t JUST have to be to people. :)

I can’t remember any stranger doing anything nice for me randomly. I had ppl hold open doors, let me in line because I had one item and they had many. That to me is common stuff.
Umm, I remember once my hair dresser asked me if I was comfortable. It kind of threw me off guard. I wasn’t expecting it. I thought that was so thoughtful of her and it made me realize that no one ever asked me that, and that made me sad.

Helping people on this site probably counts as a random act of kindness, no?

I LOVE doing random acts of kindness for people!

On the freeway offramps where homeless people like to sit with signs, i usually give them bottles of water or any change i can find in my care.

For my senior project in highschool i did my whole project on charities! It was the funnest 6 months of school ever! I went and helped at soup kitchens, helped make 250 lunches for the homeless and then that night went and delivered all the lunches to the local shelters along with clothes that had been given tot he church! I felt so honored to help them and be a part of all that!

One time my brothers and i walked to Burger King and then accidently gave us an extra full meal and so on the way back home me and my lil brother decided to give it to a homeless man and he gave us each a hug! (not super sanitary but it was the thought that counted!)

I wish more people would do stuff like this! It helps to show people we all care!!!

Of course, this site’s full of amazing people! It was the randomness I was disputing, not the kindness! :P

i was in an office the other with a bunch of other people waiting to be seen by the personnel on hand. it was over an hour wait. during this wait, i chatted up a conversation with a girl and her mother. during this conversation, the girl started rubbing her eyes really hard to the point they were bloodshot. her mother asked her what was wrong. she stated her contact lenses were drying out in her eyes and she had no eye drops. normally, i would not do this, but without hesitation, i offered her my eye drops. she thanked me profusely because she stated she did not have the money to buy new contact lenses at this time and it saved her from going without them. i let her keep the eye drops. i normally would not have done it due to sanitary reasons dealing with eyes. :-)

Long long loooong time ago, There was a crazy lady who lived outside the 7-11 I worked at. She was mentally ill and would not stay in the government housing.. always running off.. One night it was cold and raining outside, and she hadnt set up her little camp by 10 as she usually did.. at 12ish she came back, wet and shivering, and she cudnt setup her little camp. so I went out and gave her a hot coffee and a sausage roll. She didnt really respond or see me.. just went about her things.. but i found the empty cup outside next morning..

lol oh and once she barged into the store screaming, throwing stuff on the floor.. the cops came around and the local social worker too.. took her away for a few days.. and she came back later with a new set of clothes and a new shopping cart for her junk.

That’s government care for you I guess - always a new shopping trolley but no chance of a roof over your head.

I just rememebr my cousin was driving to the shop and saw a little old lady walking along the path, not thinking much of it untill she drove back and noticed her again walking in the other direction, it was a British winter so she stopped and asked her where she was going, the old lady replied home, so she offered her a lift, which the old lady accepted, once in the car the old lady wasn’t sure where she lived so my cousin drove her around a bit trying to jog her memory, nothing, my cousin was starting to panick at this point and decided to take the lady home to her mum who was a nurse, still the old lady couldn’t rememebr where she lived so may Aunt suggested calling the hospital and nursing ha good 2 miles from where my cousin found her the home were sooooo pleased, I completly forgot that story untill Joe mentioned his act of kindness

Well they did put a roof over her head a few times but she wouldnt stay. She was mentally unwell and would not stay in the government flats. The social worker was a nice lady, she actually left her number at the store to call if any help was needed..

There was also this catholic father who used to come around to see the homeless on that street.. Dont remember his name now, but he did come in a couple of times to buy food, drinks and once a bottle of deodorant for the homeless.. must’ve had a hot date that night lol..

I asked the store owner to comp off a few things for the father, but he was too cheap. I ended up quitting when I lost the city apartment and had to move to sticks.
