monitor-vs-computer

I view a lot of streaming content (anime) online via my laptop. I currently have a Dell Studio 1537 laptop which has a 15″ screen and it has HDMI and VGA ports to connect an external display. I want a larger screen to watch online streams. I am torn between purchasing a 25 inch monitor so I can use it as a large screen viewing source or just purchasing a cheap desktop with a 20 inch screen that would only be used for the purpose of viewing online streams. I do not watch regular TV due to there is never anything on that I want to watch and the few shows that I find interesting are available for free on YouTube, Hulu, AOL, etc. The reason I have the question is also due to not knowing the advantage of using a computer monitor over using a HDTV over using a regular computer system. Also, the cost of the monitor is only a few dollars different than the desktop unit. I do not need another computer system. I am just thinking of the convenience of having another system so I will not have to keep moving my laptop between a tv stand and my desk. I thank you for your answers. I have over thought everything to the point of confusion. LOL

Well, the only real advantages of the HDTV are higher quality (which you won’t get if you’re only viewing online streams) and bigger size (which is actually a disadvantage when you’re viewing low-quality video as the picture just looks really blocky). I’d go with the cheaper option and use the spare memory space on the desktop to back up your laptop’s hard-drive, so if your laptop gets corrupted by anything you’ve got everything saved.

Dorian-thank you. i did not think about the streaming really not being of higher quality. that should be a decision maker right there, but i know me and my bipolar may get a wild hair and want to watch DVDs or something of the sort in the future. i guess that may also throw a kink in my thinking. see! this is what i am talking about when i say i am over thinking this situation. LOL

Well even if you’re going to be watching DVDs, a 5-inch difference in monitor size isn’t going to spoil your enjoyment. And getting a hi-definition monitor isn’t going to make a difference unless you buy Blu-Ray or Hi-def movies, in which case you’d also need the hardware to play them. I’d stick with the computer.
