Is anyone else as p*ssed off with this Twitter outage as I am?

Apparently they’ve been defending against a DDoS attack for the last three hours, which means the whole site’s gone down. As my job is based around Twitter, this has left me stuck at work with nothing to do for the last three hours. Fun.

Gosh I thought it was just my computer! I went to twitter.com and it wouldnt load, only my profile and like.. profiles of other people show. Everything else just freezes and wont load. The thing that pisses me off the most is that I dont even use twitter that often, but right now when I actually need to get on, I cant! I wonder how long will this last….

Personally, I think it’s funny. People get so addicted to these social networking web sites, and they have no idea how to function in the real world when the site goes down for a while.

And the reason I was so annoyed about it was that my job was to copy information about companies from their twitter feeds into our database. No twitter = no job for me.

Now they’re saying it was an attack on Twitter, Facebook, Livejournal and several Google and Yahoo sites, and it was all targeted at this one Georgian blogger to silence him. The Russians are at it again…

Do Russians have that kind of technical capability? I always thought the Chinese were much more committed to the whole world domination via internet idea. They apparently have a whole division (10,000 troops) in their armed forces dedicated to developing online warfare.

It’s hardly online warfare - infect a few thousand PCs with a virus and you can hand over access to them to anyone you want. Some people make good money sending out millions of spam emails with links to viruses that create these botnets. And by people, we’re talking individuals, so if they can do it, it’s a pretty safe bet the Russians can too.
