I for the longest time didn’t both, my antivirus was out of date, downloaded a new version of AVG 2 days ago, it scans daily.
Thank goodness, who knows what those trojans had been doing.

I have AVG and yahoo security and I do both. Yahoo security I do that manually and the AVG is done automatically on a daily basis and I also do almost a daily delete of my browsing, just in case.

yes they can be very nasty. their are methods you can use to get rid of them.
1.wipe your computer and reinstall your os and other critical programs.
2.run a last good config after deleting infected files.
determine what the virus is doing. (most are just mal ware and will adventually just destroy your software) some will actually adjust you computers fan and other critical hardware settings which will result in frying your motherboard….. expensive!. some are spyware like and looking for personal info. unplug this comp from net and then start trying to get rid of the problem. remember it is not that much to wipe and reinstall. so do not be afraid of hurting anything cause it is cause it is already dead or you can just get it off your backup. or last good config.
