Depends on the type of self improvement. What is it that you want to change?

Well, a few questions.

1. How long have you been in recovery? (and congrats on that as well)
2. Are you in a 12 step program or some other type of support group?
3. Are you religious or spiritual in anyway? (not trying to preach, I just don’t want to step on your toes)
4. Have you taken a thorough moral inventory of your character faults that you would like to improve on?

Charles,
Self improvement starts with goals.
You need to decide who and what you want to be.
You need to write these things down.
For instance:

What kind of person do you want to be?
Do you want to be kind, forceful, self confident, helpful fit, strong, energetic, positive, shy, gregarious, etc.
What kind of friends do you want?
What kind of social activities do you want (stay away from drugs and alcohol), so think about others, like sports, or whatever interests you.
Make a list of books you want to read.
What can you do in your community to help others?
What kind of job do you want this year, next year, in ten years time?
What kind of family life do you want?
What improvements can you make in your current situation?
What skills do you want to develop?

Write all these things down and read them every day. Change them as you learn more about yourself and your development.
Now start planning improvements in each of these issues. Make a list of things you can do to help yourself achieve these goals AND THEN START DOING THEM!

Realize that improvment come in small incremental steps. But if you stay focused on any goal, you can achieve what appears impossible over time. Imagine how far you can walk if you take the same number of steps that you took yesterday, for the next ten years, but take them all in one direction. It is no extra effort, but it is always to the same goal.

Ho about maybe just general workout in a Gym. Not power stuff, but staying fit and lean, perhaps.

Get into fitness, sport of some kind etc.

Seriously, I know you are having a hard time bringing yourself in to a group, but you really are going to need it. You need people around you who have been through it. They will help you in so many ways. Consider going to a meeting. Drag a friend or familly member along and just tell people that you are there because you were curious about what goes on at these things. They get that all the time. If you feel the need to tell people that you are there because your cousin is just entering a program and you want to know a little more about what it’s like, then that’s fine. You can’t keep doing it, but if that’s what you have to do to get yourself in the door, then do it.

Anyway, enough pep talk. My first 12 step meeting wasn’t by choice. I understand your hesitance, but I can’t really give great suggestions about working around it. If I think of some, I’ll bring them by here.

I can help you with self confidence.

I run confidence training sessions live and interactive over the phone.
If you are interested, let me know. There is a fee but it’s very small - $15 Australian. It also comes with a money back guarantee.

If you are in financial hardship, give me some proof and I’ll do it for free.

Warm regards

Lawrence.
