I moved to america 2 years ago from england and ive been depressed ever since.

ive gone from loads of brilliant friends to none.i have no one to talk to anymore, my family is coming apart. my brothers drinking all the time and i just cant seem to make myself feel better. my dads always angry and stressed about money same as my mum. i went back to england 5 weeks ago and had the time of my life but since i got back ive been more depressed then ive ever been. i know america will be better in the long run for schools and jobs but is it worth it?

Maybe your resentment about moving there is causing your inability to make friends, you might come across as cold or unsociable.
What is it that you dislike so much there?

me too, it’s so hard to live here… I’m depressing all the time, and just can’t stop crying, a half of my family is here, the other half is there… I dunno if studies in the states are really worth it… It’s like you are talking about me ^.^
I miss all my friends, all the parties, all the fun I had… I feel just a lonely person (if that just make you feel any better), you re not alone

I dont know its the whole thing i tried really hard to make friends in the beginning and i thought it was me maybe comin off as unsociable but i talked to my brother and found out he was going through the same thing i was. people talked to us but only for our accents they never wanted to continue on to become our friends.

no really, no offense, people here tend to be really mean… beleive me I’m a very social person.. I smile all the time to people, but they don’t really seem good at appreciating people who aren’t from their country…

There aren’t as many ppl in England so we get to know ppl on the street & get used to smiling at relative strangers, over there, they don’t get to know ppl in the same way.
I guess it’s just different country’s behave differently. The uk is quite a friendly place.

First, it takes at least two years to get used to a new place. I moved from Ohio to Florida two years ago, and I HATED Florida for the first 1 1/2 years. Now, I’m starting to get used to it.

Second, different regions in the US are very different from each other. Where are you? I’m from the Midwest (Ohio), but I’ve lived in the Northeast (Connecticut), Mid-Atlantic (Philadelphia), South (North Carolina and Georgia), and now Florida (trust me, Florida is NOT the South!). Each region is very different, and each has a different way of treating outsiders. People in the Midwest are very friendly and generally accepting but seen as being boring, backward, and kind of dumb (not true!). People in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic can be outright mean. People in the South were friendly until I opened my mouth and my Midwestern accent came out; then it was like I didn’t exist. Florida is just plain weird.

Hang in there — it will probably get better. I hope it does.

Do you think CA is pretty much like FL I mean are people mean there too?

Ohio is home, and nothing will ever change that, but I doubt that I will ever live there again. If Florida doesn’t work out (I’m giving it one more year — and it largely depends on what she does), then I plan to move to the DC area, probably Virginia. The DC area is highly cultured, very cosmopolitan, and extremely diverse; yet, the country is less than two hours away. True, the cost of living is high, but salaries tend to be higher as well. OK, OK, my best friend lives there, too, and that’s a big factor.

I’ve never been to California, even though my sister lives there. Some people love it, while others think that it is very superficial. I don’t know enough to offer an informed opinion, except to say that the cost of living is very high.

My niece, from California, is in England now, in Newcastle. She’s working on her Master’s degree. She says many of the same things about England that you are saying about the US. I think a lot of it is that it’s just difficult for outsiders to fit in, no matter where they are.

Hon, people in the US are no different than anywhere else..we have our assholes and nice people. It seems to me that maybe you are just not comfortable where you are and you are missing England and your family (which is totally understandable and normal!) …and people can read that. Trust me, people get vibes…be a little more open

I’m from Romania. I felt exactly like you say you do. I believe when you say you are social and I hate people who comment that ” oh, maybe it’s you” etc. No. It’s the **** isolation one feels when being so far away from your life-long friends, your environment and besides- americans are so different. They are your best friend - for 5 minutes- then they dissapear! I had American friends, European friends and friends from all over the world. But the American ones are just so used to being by themselves, self sufficient and are used to being lonely, they accept it in a way that drives a new comer crazy. I moved back home because I just couldn’t take it anymore. Friendships do not last for more than few months and it is exhausting to start again all the time. Isolation at work also, so **** cubicles I will never miss. Good luck to you in making the right decision. I faced the same questions and after years of thinking I decided that no, it is not worth it- for me at least it wasn’t.
