Love help: Broke up with my girlfriend of 3 and a half years this week was it the right thing to do? - Help.com

Broke up with my girlfriend of 3 and a half years this week was it the right thing to do?

We’re still in love but we’re both stubborn people and fight nearly all the time when we’re together, and shortly after a larger than usual fight we talked and decided to break up. Is it right to break up because of that? we still both really care about each other and this sucks.

We’re both early twenties and go to the same university

If you fight like crazy, maybe you guys need a break from each other. Take a break.

Maybe you spend too much time together. A little bit of distance is essential.

It is not good to stay long term in a relationship where you always fight and/or bicker

The reason I say this is b/c of the time factor, it seems as if this relationship may be one that is a ‘marriage’ relationship. Here’s the reason that is so scary:

In your early 20’s, ’til death’ doesn’t really seem that long. However, 30,40, 50 years can be an eternity if you are with the wrong person (even if you are ‘ok’ with divorce, and you only stay for 10 years…your lives will still be very intertwined with children, etc)

Anyway, on to my point: my grandparents were married for over 50 years and they bickered each and every day. They were never downright mean to each other; they were never violent…they just had to ‘have the last word’ or be the one to make most smart (email removed) comment…etc. It was horrible to be in the same room with them. I, as an outsider, could feel the tension in the air. During family gatherings, everyone wore a frown instead of a smile. My Grandma used to talk in this annoyingly shrill, loud voice. It was horrible.

My Grandpa passed away 8 years ago. I’m sad about that, but at the same time, my Grandma has a completely different personality. She’s more free and carefree. She smiles, jokes and laughs. Her voice is normal again.

I think the stress was horrendous in that relationship, even though they did love each other…they bickered so much that they were not comfortable together.

Don’t end up in a relationship like that.
