is there a doctor in the house?

im freaking out again… same stuff different day. I have had GERD for the past 6 years…(practically untreated because of no insurance) i have also been smoking for 6 years (and trying to quit for 2) Im 22 years old and this past year my reflux has gotten even worse. It was always terrible and now its hindering my life.. lately ive been taking kapidex which takes away the burn but for the past year i’ve been having unexplained pain in the middle of my chest.. lately it has become a constant stabbing in my sternum… ive been to the hospital twice in the past two weeks and they wont do anything to help me. My insurance ends monday….SO… i was wondering how likely it is that this “esophageal spasm” as the hospital calls it.. is being caused by esophageal cancer… i dont choke on my food .. but sometimes my throat does feel full ..but usually the “something caught in throat feeling” only comes when i am not taking my medicine.

yeah thats what the hospital told me.. the only thing is it wont go away. Yesterday they gave me a drink that numbed my mouth and throat… it made it easier to breathe but didnt take away from the pain in my sternum. No pain medications help either.. not tylenol, tramadol, or ibuprophen 800.

I don’t know if i make too much money now.. cause i started getting the benefits when i didnt have a job… now i have had one for almost 5 months and make like 9.25 an hour.

Hey there… I had the same feeling a short while ago. Ultrasound found tiny cysts in the thyroid, but not enough to cause the choking feeling. I have suffered from GERD on & off for years too. Recently I’ve been under amazing amounts of stress and not sleeping enough. After talking with my doctor, she said stress can cause problems too, and make other things worse.

So I did what I could to deal with what I knew about. I stopped eating right before going to bed. I went to bed earlier. I tried to lose weight (but I couldn’t, oh well). I cut down on caffeine (coffee, tea and chocolate) and tried to go out, walk and look at the sky and the trees and the birds during lunch breaks. When I started mentally freaking out about stuff I’d try to remember to stop myself and think about nicer stuff. I volunteered to work at a local wildlife rehabilitation center for 4 hours a week.

Sometimes I felt better and sometimes I felt lousy and unhappy — but somewhere in there my throat stopped choking up all the time. I can’t even say when it happened. It took about 4 months.

I didn’t do things perfectly. I didn’t stop stressing out over stuff but what I did do is when I realized I was stressing, I dealt with it then. I decided what I could do something about and what I just had to wait out… and if I had to wait it out then I was going to do my best to stop stressing over it when I started. If I found out I was stressing, I didn’t punish myself or feel bad about it! I just tried to stop when I figured out what I was doing. I let myself cry when I needed to and then stopped when I was done. I guess what I did is try to take some control of myself back and introduce some balance, and even though there’s still a lot of **** going on, I’m handling it better.

And the result is that I’m not choking up anymore. I didn’t even start taking Prilosec (omeprazole OTC) again until I hadn’t felt that throttling feeling for a couple of months.

Hang in there and have patience…. You can have a hand in your own health. As to health insurance, Blue cross/blue shield used to have a good $30/month option for uninsured folks with incomes like yours. I think you would qualify if they still have it. Also, some universities have a temp program that will offer insurance if you work as little as half-time. So explore your options, and remember that you are the best health care supplement out there — you can generally do more for your health than doctors. It just takes awhile to make a difference.

I had to keep telling myself that I’ve had this GERD for more than 10 years, so the choking feeling was years in the making. I couldn’t expect to make it go away in a few days. That’s why I’m so surprised to realize it is gone now. It took months, but it’s gone.

I hope you can do it too. I’m wishing you the absolute best.

((((huggs to you)))), GryphonCat
