I just got my retainer today and i refused to wear it at school because i sounded like a lisping idiot (not insulting those of you with a lisP) BUT I sound HORRIBLE and please don’t say it will take a couple of days, i wont wear it at school if i sound like this, but what do i do with my tounge to say t or s?

retainers are diffrent than braces, one of the reasons is because with braces you will learn how to talk normally with them, however with retainers somtimes you dont, you dont have to were your retainers all day unless your orthodontist (bad spelling) tells you to, mainly wear them after school and when your asleep
Don’t worry. That is how I feel. I don’t wear my retainer at school because I STILL can’t talk with my retainer, even after having it for months. I can’t really pronounce the ’shh’ sound or the ’s’ sound, or the ‘t’ sound. I hope I learn how to soon, because I don’t want crooked teeth because of not wearing my retainer. I hope this helps just a little! I’m sorry, but I really don’t have a solution because I feel the EXACT same way you do!!
i have the same probleem ! i dont even wear mine to bed as its really uncomfortable . but i dont even sound understandable when i talk with it in . :D please help me too . xx
i know how you guys feel im having that problem right now and im frustrated that i can’t talkk
GUYS DON’T DO WHAT I DID I’ve been wearing my retainer everyday for months so two weeks ago I decided I didn’t need it anymore. BIG MISTAKE. My teeth ached so much because they were moving until finally I knew I had to keep wearing my retainer. IT HURTS LIKE HELL.
I was fine when I wore it every night. My orthodontist told me to wear it all day, and I was like “No way!! I’m not going to school like a lispy retard” so I just wore it at night. I was fine until I decided to take it off.
me to same problem

hey..so you just have to practice…i know itz tuff but keep trying. try to just do the s sound by keeping your teeth together and then sssssss ing hope it helps =)
hi i got a retainer yesterday and i can already talk fine! practice makes perfect!
That’s the same reason I stopped wearing my retainer… it gave me a lisp. I wore it for two months and practiced s sounds all the time and I never figured out how to make a proper s sound. My family made fun of me because I would practice speaking with them.
I was already shy and mumbled when I spoke… I was new to a college where nobody new me… when I finally spoke up, I had a lisp. Couldn’t stand it. I tried wearing it at night only, but then my teeth were sore every morning. Then I started forgetting it… eventually it stopped fitting and now my teeth are in need of braces again! My underbite is coming back and it’s pushing my top teeth forward (giving me buck teeth) and my bottom teetg are tilting inward (crowding my tounge).
Maybe if I had just told the ortho, they might have been able to do something (maybe the retainer didn’t fit properly).
practice practice practice, and if after a month or two it doesn’t work, ask your ortho if there is something wrong
when you’re alone, read outloud to yourself (for practice)
If you insist on not wearing them to school, then wear them every minute that you’re not in school… wear it up until the minute you get out of the car and head towards the school, then as soon as you get into the car to go home, put it back in.
Sing along to music while having them in for more practice.
If anybody makes fun of you, tell them “at least I’ll have a beautiful smile and this lisp is only temporary” and tell them that they’ll be stuck with their ugly attitude and you’ll be looking like a supermodel
Get guys, i found a very good solution for this, Learn the British accent. I’m not joking i did this and its quite easier to talk, although people are gonna be like wtf?
i have the same problem. it really sucks my dentist says to keep it in all the time and i cant say the T and S i dont want to wear it to school cause i sound like i have a lisp( no offfence to anyone who has it) but i sound like donald duck!!! no joke! it has been 2 days since i got my retainer i sound alot better but hopefully it is all good soon…. and good luck to everyone with a retainer!! dont worry braces R ova!!!! and im sure u all have a beautiful smile!! just keep the retainers in and before u know it u wont even know u have them in good luck1
I’ve have this same terrible problem!! It sucks !!!!! :/
Got mine last night and my teeth are still getting used to it so it makes them ache :( i still sound stupid but 10 times better than when i first put it in, i got better by sitting in bed reading out loud before going to sleep :’)
Hey there ive had my retainer for year. Ive only just started wearing it at school i have a lisp so does my.best frind its normal i cant say d. T. S. Sh very annoying when a teacher talks to u. It might hurt a bit tho.
A retainer is not that bad… Just read aloud for twenty minutes a day and your lisp should go away by a month.
