computer help: Hi, - Help.com

Hi,

I have a Dell Studio 1537 with windows Vista on it and the latest version of Pc-cillin antivirus software. Lately my comp has been giving me a lot of trouble.
1. The cd drive quite working - not even showing up. I found a solution online which required me to delete a file from the registry. I did that, and it now shows up, but Roxio no longer works with the drive.
2. Microsoft Word no longer recognizes the fonts. All the fonts are in the font folder. Both Open office and Notepad have no problem. Installing the fonts again does no good. Re-installing Word does no good.
3. My System Restore does not update automatically even though it is set to do so. Last week I made two system restore points, and they no longer exist. In other words, I have no system restore points.
4. Several times the computer has given me a blue screen in which it states that it is shutting down windows because of some error that might cause damage.
5. Closing the lid no longer simply puts the comp to sleep - it shuts it off without windows closing down properly. It is set to only put the comp to sleep, but it no longer does that.

Any ideas on what might be going wrong? Are these inter-related or co-incidentally isolated?

Thanks.
Nathan

go to device manager.
(does the drive show a “bang” or “error” state?)
right click the drive and uninstall it.
reboot.
