I received an Other Than Honorable discharge from the Army.

I was in for less than a year and broke my hip towards the end of basic, but still walked for graduation (limped, actually). By the time I arrived at Ft Eustis for AIT, I was in dire need of surgery, which I eventually got several months later, after being halfway done with class and eventually kicked out since I couldn’t the climb the helicopter I was learning to fix. Fed up, I went AWOL for about 40 days and then turned myself in at Ft Knox (to a dept where all of the AWOL people turn themselves in) and recieved an OTH without having to stand in front of a court martial. What is my likeliness of being able to get a federal job, such as one with the Census Bureau? I was a great soldier… but unfortunately could not handle the way I was treated after becoming what felt like a permanent profile.

I wouldn’t plan on holding any federal job anywhere ever if I were you.

Yeah, I wouldn’t plan on holding any kind of job that’s government related. Sorry! You should have stayed in and done your time.

Good luck!

While obtaining a federal job or government job may be impossible, I would not let that hold me down. I spent 3 years active duty with an honorable discharge and went back in for a second time around to realize the Army is a complete mess!! The Army is totally screwed right now, suicides (undereported), countless AWOL soldiers, and the people currently in, have more problems than the DSM-IV is capable of identifying. I went AWOL, turned myself in and received the other than honorable. I had a kick *** offer from a company and took the job expediting my way out of the Army. I needed to obtain a license (Series 7) to trade and I had NO problems whatsoever. I continue to have job offers from private companies which many could give a **** less about the misguided military policies. Some advice, if I may, dont blame yourself….or feel bad about it. Just move in and forget the whole experience. In terms of a job, there are plenty of GOOD jobs avilable out there that are non governmental who do not run a federal or FBI backround check.
