WARNING: GRAPHIC VIDEO.

I found this online in a forum I’m in.
http://www.thetodayexperience.com/2009/09/01/chicks-being-ground-up-alive-w arning-graffic-content/
I used to think this was funny like 2,3 years ago. But now it’s sad &disgusting. Who agrees?
Obviously I’m not a vegan or vegitarian as I eat fish, chicken & dairy. But I gets me thinking…
Again. It’s a post, so I’m bound to get some disagreeing. Disagree if you must. It’s the internet & I’m only trying to get opinions.

I don’t know. I think it is not the best solution to the problems. The news site said that they do it to about 200 million male chicks a year. The reason being that male chicks don’t produce eggs and that they don’t mature quickly enough or either large enough to make it economically feasible to sell them as food. They can’t just let them loose either. Having 200 million chickens running around just isn’t environmentally safe. It would also create more distress for the chickens too. Now me, I’m sure that many people starving in third world countries would be grateful to have a male chicken dinner, no matter how small it was. However, again it costs money to transport them. They would probably be shipped alive in order to preserve them cheaply, so it would also create more distress on them. That’s another thing to consider. A partial solution might be for charity groups to buy these unwanted chickens on the cheap and ship them where people need food.

As for whether death by grinder is humane? It certainly looks grizzly, but if you watch the video, it probably isn’t more than a second while the chick actually passes through the grinder.

Also, how do they get people to work in places like that? Offer lots of money for sure. But I don’t think I could do it for any amount of money. It just makes me queasy, no matter how I feel about it ethically.

I will say that I won’t support the outright banning of the practice. I’d certainly like someone to find a nicer solution though. I’m sure some smart scientist could come up with a way to make chickens lay eggs that are all female.

I don’t need to watch this.. I just watched Earthlings last week (find it on google video).

Yes, I agree that this is both sad and disgusting. I am also a meat eater but, I make informed decisions about the food I am purchasing. I buy mostly local when it comes to fresh produce, fish and meat products and I buy from reputable farmers which I have researched. :)

I hope this doesn’t sound stupid, but is that expensive? .-. I’ve begged my mom to go to a farmer’s market & she says they’re all expensive.

I get what you mean, :) I also wouldn’t protest fully against it. Can’t change the minds of people. I just feel bad cause they’re so cute & fluffy & the procedure looks dirty…I thought the cow thing was gross…this made me tear alittle to be honest. lol.

Farmers markets can be more expensive but, it is not outrageous.

Plus not all of your food needs to be purchased there. I recommend going just to pick up some local vegetables and fruits and taking a look at the different things and what they cost. They will cost more but, then you know the prices and can properly budget for your meals.

buying local is good for your local economy and the food will be ripe and flavorful.

Other alternatives include growing and raising your own food.

absolutely if you can. If you’re in a condo or apartment you can at least grow your own herbs.

& I do :). I grow my own tomatoes, eggplants, & peppers, but nothing big because my mom would freak. But I’m working on seeing what else I can plant. I tried to grow strawberries, but they came out tiny & sour. .-. I failed lol. Do you guys know if cucumber plants, if planted, would take over my backyard?

in an industry as big as the egg and chicken industry, of course the animals need to be treated like this, as otherwise they would become a liability and the businesses would not be profitable.

moral of the story, don’t eat chickens or battery eggs. simple.

i haven’t done so for seven years, and my life hasn’t really changed a whole lot, but at least i can say that i am not at all to blame for the way these innocent baby animals are treated.

glitter, try planting a wall,,hanging the vines of plants insted of letting them run,,medium sized plants on the bottom, small plants in the middle and hanging plants on the top,,you have to do the least amount of bending over or climbing

also for the rebellious plants, if u can put a single piece of springwater packed tuna 6inches under each plant, and 1 asprin next to the plant on the surface of the dirt

bone meal from the garden shop is also good
