How to clean white canvas?

I’ve got some white canvas pumps and have worn them a bit so now they’re kinda..um, dirty.I really want to get them clean but I don’t know how? I was told by some to avoid water; “water leaves stains” and told by others than I should use it. Then some have suggested buying whitener that I can’t find anywhere :(

So, is there any way of getting them clean without using any spray-on treatments etc?

Wal Mart. Automotive department. Its called ‘Goop.’ Its a white, waterless hand cleaner that i have used on tons of my clothes to get stains out, and i have even tried them on shoes. It works very well. Im sure you could find a better cleaner but since i see no one has offered advice. Thats all i got! lol! Lets just say it gets out blood….
