Sleep deprivation

I’ve been staying awake for a couple of days at a time then sleeping 3-5hrs, can this cause any problems? I think I might be getting use to it now. Any help appreciated.

It’s important to get regular and good quality sleep. The body effectively “repairs and renews” itself during sleep.

This article provides a useful insight into the effects of sleep deprivation on our well-being: http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbod…. Mental function is impaired and certain disorders have been linked to erratic sleep patterns.

Try and get yourself into a good routine and avoid pulling all nighters too often. You’ll feel better for it and won’t be putting your health at risk.

I’ll check with a doc, I use to sleep only a couple of hours a day at school and was told it wasn’t a problem, so i kinda became nervous of over sleeping

Good choice, and yes we live in a very busy society where sometimes we need to cut some sleep to met deadlines (school, work) but our body need more 3/5 hours of sleep per night :-)

It sounds like the root cause of your sleep deprivation is actually anxiety.

Talk to your doctor about that.

You might like to try some relaxation therapy too. Youtube has some good exercises you can try.. or fish around on the net for some techniques to help you rest.

Avoid caffeine, additives and colourings and make a commitment to a healthy diet too. Sometimes we put so many chemicals in our body that we end up in overdrive!

Still worth talking to your doctor. You can ask him to refer you to a sleep clinic which specialises in these issues.

We rarely do recognise anxiety. Sometimes it manifests itself as something completely different like insomnia! Something you were worried about years ago may have triggered this response in you and things have simply got out of balance.

Avoid adrenalin-boosting activities when you can’t sleep. Tai chi is good, as are yoga, listening to calm music and simple repetitive tasks like stroking the dog! Try camomile tea and using aromatherapy oils like lavender.

Don’t ignore things though. Whilst you may feel you are coping right now, things could change and the longer you leave it the harder it may be to find solutions.
Good luck !
