Save more often, keep backups in multiple places. You should have learned that in high school.
I’d say reconstruct it for sure if you have the time, memory and it were less than 30% of the completed version (approximately).
Otherwise, it depends on other things such as what the assignment is worth, what you’re willing to do for it, etc..

Explain the sitution to your tutor before the deadline hits! They may allow you an extension or have an alternative suggestion.

Do as much as you can to rewrite the assignment.

You might also consider taking your hard drive to an IT support outlet. Some places are able to recover lost data in certain circumstances.

Good luck.

When you say ‘crashed’ - what do you mean exactly? Do you mean that the system went *pop* and you can’t start it up any more? Did it just crash while you were typing and you lost all your saved work? Also what application were you using: Microsoft Word, etc?

In these cases the more information you can give us, the easier it will be to help. Assuming the first case, where the entire system goes down then, as mumstheword pointed out, you could take it to an I.T. outlet (or friends house), plug the hard drive in as a secondary drive on their system and then copy the file across that way.

Post any extra info you can. :)
