You don’t know what your accomplishments are there at that company? Look in your job description.

Associate software engineer. But they say they do not have projects. They just keep asking me to wait. It’s been a year already.

If you try to deceive the University, you will be found out and your career will be ruined. The University will already have done their research so you will be shown up as a liar and cheat.

Be honest.

It’s not unusual in this economic climate for companies to keep employees on hold in training/waiting.

When you are asked, tell them how interesting you found the training and that it was unfortunate that the recession held you back as you had lots of ideas you would have liked to try out. Then steer the conversation towards what sort of things you would have LIKED to have been involved in, what initiatives you would like to have brought to the table etc.

This is the best route to take.

Turn the situation to your advantage.

Say things like “ironically, because the recession has slowed up the work flow, I now find myself in the ideal position to study for my Masters”.

and “I was able to make the most of my unexpected freetime and took the opportunity to read up on latest technologies/ideas/initiatives. I have been exploring…. and …. ” (tell them about things you might have heard on the business news, look back at former journals etc..)

If you can show the University that you have used your situation wisely, then you will have put yourself forward in the best light.
