laptop help: My laptop screen stopped working. - Help.com

My laptop screen stopped working.

I plugged it into an external monitor. When I start the laptop I see the windows xp and the check disk screen than it goes gray, after awhile I hear the startup music but no display on the screen.

sounds like a glitched graphics driver

start it in safe mode, see if that helps - if it does, download, and install up to date graphics drivers

oh - it is possible its your graphics card itself that has fried itself - don’t know enough on laptop builds to suggest a fix to that one…

sounds like a driver problem or a loose connection on the graphics card but tbh losse connections arnt common (they just normally dont work at all) so im leaning towards a driver problem. but seens you plugged in an external moniter it could be settings, try plugging the external moniter in again if you can

repeatedly tap F8 on the keyboard when you are booting, and select safe mode from the screen that comes up

Tried it. I did not get the option to start in safe mode. As soon as the Windows XP screen came up the check disk screen came up. When it said to press any key to skip I pressed several keys but it did not skip. Makes me think it is not recognizing the keyboard for some reason.

F8 is pressed repeatedly RIGHT at the start, literally as you turn the power on…

Are they any other problems with keyboard/mouse recognition?

It is plugged into the external monitor. The laptop screen is disconnected. I have no way to get to my settings so I guess I will just have to have someone pull the info off the hard drive and get a different laptop.
Thank you both for trying to help me.

Finally was able to start it in safe mode. However, I cannot get it to connect to the internet to be able to check for drivers.

select safe mode with networking (safemod dissables things that dont have to be run and the internet is dissabled) but if you boot in to safe mode with networking it should work
