please help, what does this mean?

i’m learning about historians in school, and i came across a sentence saying “if we don’t write our own history, someone else will write it for us” can someone please tell me what this means?

In historical context I know that certain conquests involved destroying the libraries and scriptures of a nation and much of their history is lost in the process, maybe the saying has something to do with that.

I think it’s saying that if we don’t keep record of our history than people can only guess on how we acted and how our culture was.
