I have a kitten who is 8-10 weeks old and has a swollen belly. - Help.com

I have a kitten who is 8-10 weeks old and has a swollen belly.

She vomited a little bit last night however she hasn’t since. Shes’ had diarrhea in the past which cleared up but now it’s back again and it’s quite bad. She’s still eating loads and drinking loads. She has been de-wormed and is still playful. Should I be really concerned? She has a vet appointment on Thursday but should I take her earlier if this continues throughout the weekend?

Awwwwww! A kitten! I think it is just a kitten thing and the vet will put it right on Thursday.

If she seems ok, still playful and not in distress, still drinking and eating then I would think it to be ok to leave until Thursday but if it changes then take her in.

Is she on kitten food?
Kittens have to have special kitten food, like babies need baby food, they can’t digest full yet.

And she is on kitten food, but she prefers adult food, we have another cat who’s and adult and the kitten prefers to eat her food.

well adult food is not a great idea cause she can’t digest it properly….
so maybe you should try and convince her to eat her’s :D
that was pretty late so i don’t think it’s from the pills then..
if she doesn’t get worse then it’s ok to take her when her appointment is..but tell about it to the vet..and even about the fact that she prefers adult food

make sure she says hydrated and always has access to water.
It can take a number of days for a kitten to adjust to new food.
She really should b eating kitten food. As the older cats stuff lacks nutrients she needs and contains stuff that may b causing the trouble.
Good luck..
fingers crossed!

Thanks! We’ve tried but whenever we put the other cats food there she pushes past the other cat to eat. She is getting better at eating her own good however she loves whatever our other cat is eating, she seems to be copying her a lot!
Thanks again!

as others have said, this is why. adult food is too rich for little kitty stomachs, and not high enough in protein.
also, kittens and puppies really need to be wormed every 2 weeks for the first 12 weeks of life, worms breed especially well in little baby tummies, and a swollen tummy and diarrhea is a sign of worms.
when i first got my pup, she hadnt been wormed properly and the first round of tablets made her poop a big ol writhing mess of wriggly worms, after that she actually ate less, as she was getting all the nutrition she needed from less, and her belly wasnt quite as ethiopian-child-looking either.

Oh! Okay! Thank you! Her poo is getting harder but only slightly, and her swollen belly has lessened but yet it’s still there. We’ve kept the adult food away from her despite her crys. She’s still eating her own food and drinking loads and also as playful as ever!

the poo thing may also be to do with switching food, if its not the food she was fed on before you got her and you switch her straight to a new food it usually upsets their stomach till they get used to it.
they will still be playful if they have worms, they just eat more and crap lots lol

I’ve been to the vet and he said that it’s a mixture of her getting used to new food and her getting used to her home even though she’s been here for about a month now and that apart from that she’s absolutely fine!

Thanks for all your help!
