To American Atheist or anyone else that wants to read.

So, I don’t know if you kept your promise of “boycotting” the movie 9 but if not (that means you saw the movie) Yay!!

:) So, I went to go see the movie yesterday! and it was great!

I know that you believe that it is about how the technology that we are creating will eventually destroy us but it is so much more… If you can look past that simple concept you can see that it is about the human spirit/soul surviving and prevailing against all obstacles… (I don’t want to ruin the movie for anyone) So, I wont go on anymore but I would really recommend you go see the movie. If not in the Theatre you can wait until it is out on DVD…

It is a really great movie and even if you can’t look past the technology being bad part… it is really cute too. The twins #3 and #4 are the best!! :D

I have not seen the movie and I will not.

Besides, you know I don’t believe in the existence of souls and spirits. I believe there are no souls or spirits.

However, perhaps what you mean by spirit/soul is simply the essence of being human. I agree that there is something special about humans. I don’t believe it is mystical, but it is special. If that is what you are talking about, then I’m sorry to say that it is possible that part might not even survive on its own. Without technology, it is a fact that at some point the human race will become extinct. Whether through illness, famine, loss of habitat, or some cosmological catastrophe, our days - in our current state - are numbered. If we do not progress, we will die and the universe will not mourn our passing.

But perhaps this progress IS the part of being human that is special. Here is a quote that might blow your mind.

Matthew Harrison Brady: We must not abandon faith! Faith is the most important thing!
Henry Drummond: Then why did God plague us with the capacity to think? Mr. Brady, why do you deny the one thing that sets above the other animals? What other merit have we? The elephant is larger, the horse stronger and swifter, the butterfly more beautiful, the mosquito more prolific, even the sponge is more durable.

Inherit the Wind - 1960

Why eschew technology and intelligence when it is the one thing that makes us different from all the other animals?

Im sorry I wanted to have a discussion about this but I have been so busy lately :[ I haven’t had the chance to log on and respond.

Yes, you can look at the spirit as the essence of being human or your personality traits (intro/extrovert, judging/emotional, ect. I cant remember the other traits. hehe). If you believe that the human spirit/personality is special and can only survive with the help of the technology we create then you would really like the movie. I know that my friends thought the movie was pointless but their is so much you can get from it. And you can take so many different concepts from it depending on the view yo take in while watching it you might limit what you see but if you keep an open mind you can see so much.

That is a great quote :] thanks for sharing… but it is not technology and intelligence that sets us apart from animals but the ability to question and think things through sets us apart. Well I guess intelligence is apart of it but technology is a product of our intelligence. That comes after years of Questioning, and Experimenting.

your point of view is so great and I wished that we could have had a better discussion on the subject but I’ve been so busy lately and will probably not be able to log on again until the weekend :[

So, ill leave you with a quote I heard recently
“only a fool has no doubts”
I don’t have the author of the quote but American Atheist keep your doubts but don’t become a cynic. Cynicism is pointless and useless.
