parents help: I am a college grad, but I’ve never lived anywhere other than my parent’s house. - Help.com

I am a college grad, but I’ve never lived anywhere other than my parent’s house.

I’m a typical sheltered, privileged near-autistic white kid with all the subsequent mental issues that entails.

I’m this guy, only female, no Harvard, and I at least know my home address.

I don’t want pity, I want the information I need to leave.

My question is about my bank account. I want to take my savings and get out of the state. However due to the aforementioned coddling, my parents were the ones that set up my account and I’m afraid that they can freeze my account or something to get me to come back. I’m also afraid to call and ask, because some of the staff are family.

Can I ask the bank to not allow anyone else access to the account, or do I have to transfer it to another bank, or what?

I realize how pathetically sheltered I sound; that is why I’m trying to leave and that’s why I’m asking everyone for help. Please help, there are enough clueless entitled twats in the world and I refuse to be one anymore.

Hey, thanks for the link pal. I can actually relate. AND I AM ACTUALLY HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I’m no Harvard grad student but I AM a grad student.

If you apply for you own bank account, I think nobody will have the right to freeze them (or something… well, government security/military agencies can do it). As long as you are of legal age.

If I were in your position, I would first work on resolving any personal problems and self-development issues first. Then I would do any kind of research on how to survive independently and make a plan for escaping my parent’s nest. I would work on getting a job (or starting a business) so I’d have income to support myself, then I’d get my own bank account so that I wouldn’t have to worry about my parents interfering with my money.

That’s the thing, nogifts, I think they DON’T want me to leave. They act mortally offended whenever I bring it up, and passive-aggressively bring me down. I think they’re afraid of being alone. I know my mom won’t even turn off the television because she “feels less alone.”

And hitchhiking, is only a last resort.

Well, talk to your father alone then. Tell him you need to be independent because they won’t be alive forever and he has to help you. I bet he will. I bet you mom and dad don’t totally agree on it, either.

I will try this. I just hope he doesn’t rat on me. The man is inscrutable.
