This is a letter for my teacher who is leaving because of a death in his family.

Please look at it and revise, edit, and add anything you can think of. If nothing else please comment on it and tell me what you think if I wrote it to you.

Dear Sergeant Evans,

It’s weird to think about you leaving. We all see you as a father figure and mentor to us. We all do not want to see you leave, but we respect that you have to go. Of all the teachers I ever had I know that you had the most impact on my life. You made me see that I could do anything with my life if I tried and cared enough. You taught me all sorts of qualities that will make me a better person, and that I will use for the rest of my life. You are a great friend. We could always come to you for advice, and you always helped us if we struggled. You have inspired so much in each cadet. I would like to wish you the best in your future. We will miss you very much. You were special to us all and will forever be in our memories. Thank you for everything.

I wouldn’t use “dear” at the beginning as that sounds too familiar as in something you would write to a loved one. Sergeant Evans would be fine.

as for the rest…

“I understand that you are leaving, we have seen you as a father figure and a mentor to us. None of us want to see you leave but we respect that you have to go and will be greatly missed. Out of all the teachers I have had I want you to know that you made the biggest impact on my life. You helped me to see that I can reach any goal in my life if I wanted it enough. You instilled in me all the qualities that will help me to be a better person in my future and I will use those qualities all of my life. I consider you to be a great friend and hope that will extend into the future. I know that I could always come to you for advice and you always helped us if we were struggling. You were an inspiration to each and every cadet at our school. I believe that I can speak for all of the cadets at our school when I say that you will be missed and forever appreciated for your input, knowledge, guidance and leadership during the time that we knew you. I personally would like to thank you for everything you have done for us as your students in this school. I hope you will realize how much you will be missed by everyone who got to know you in your time at our…(academy, school - you pick)”

I think that this will make the statement and still keep up the formality that a sergeant would appreciate at any academy or institution. I tried not to change what you were saying but still tried to keep it somewhat formal in appearance. Hope this helps.

i dont think it needs to be formal. theyre all still human, after all. coming from the heart is the whole point of it.

I agree with Courty, it should be personal, you can get very close to your teachers you know!

Poster, leave it as it is :)
