well ethics is essentially the study of morals and morals are defined by whats right and wrong. Right and wrong is determined by certain social restraints (ie:some societies view murder differently, or Hitler thought he were morally right in getting rid of the Jews)

usually social values are backed by religious values and what they perceive of the after life since essentially in every religion how you act while alive will be a precursor to how you are treated in death.
