I doubt you’ve wrecked it, it was just a funny thing to say - it doesn’t mean anything. If I were you I would forget about that moment and pretend it never happened.
Why don’t you try becomming friends with him first? that way you can tell for sure that you like him, if he does go with that girl so what - girls like that never stick around for long.

If he liked you a little a bit, now he knows you like him too and it is just going to reinforce his liking you. We all make those kind of mistakes where we are caught like a deer in headlights. Don’t be embarrased. If anything, that teacher helped you so and him could actually have a laugh together when you talk–alone. Don’t let this chance slip by otherwise someone else is going to ask him and you will be left in the dust.

Well, the school flirt is just that a flirt. And since you know she’s the school flirt, I’m pretty sure he knows that too. So he will make the right choice when he chooses you over her or anybody else. Ask him how he’s doing in sports and whether he likes the sports he plays and what position, if you don’t know. Or ask him about his summer vacation. Or even his favorite thing to do on his free time. Some guys spend it thinking of girls and he probably thinks about you now!

It sounds like you now only like this new guy because he likes you - this is a big mistake. Did you even like him in the first place?
Even if you go with the new guy your old feelings wont go away and that would be unfair. I would stick with the guy from your english class.
Go and ask him out on Monday, just go straight up to him and say who are you going to homecoming with? and wait for him to answer, if he says no just say do you fancy comming with me?
