So I’m in this new speech class and I’m working on my second speech.
The first speech was based on an interview you did with a partner and I did exceptionally well. Except my partner basically told my life story which makes speech #2 more difficult because the topic is myself. I don’t have a problem giving speeches I just can’t seem to write one about me that I like.
I wrote this one and can’t decide if I like it or not so any comments would be appreciated!
For better or worse I speak or do what is on my mind. My parents have known this since I was little, but it was confirmed when my first grade teacher, Sister Mary, told my mother that I go right up to that line and stop and that I always knew when to stop. That was about fourteen years ago and unfortunately sometimes I lose sight of that line. The first time I lost sight of the line I was four. My family and I lived in Florida and although we had a pool, she took me to go swimming in the ocean one hot day. The thirty minute car ride seemed like a lifetime to me. I was bored and too anxious to sit quietly in the car like I usually did. I had my favorite swimsuit on; it was Little Mermaid with red ruffles and was feeling pretty full of myself. I kept asking my mother “don’t I look cute?” and “aren’t I pretty?” The first time she laughed and said yes. But I wanted a reaction out of her so I continually asked her the rest of the trip. Finally, we got out of the car and I grabbed Stripy, my large green/orange/yellow tiger-like floating raft toy. When we reached the sand there was a small crowd of people and my mother explained to me that it was a red tide. If you don’t know, a red tide is an algal bloom that slightly discolors and depletes the water of oxygen. Perfectly safe to swim in, but there usually are a high number of dead fish. Anyway, I didn’t like that answer. I held Stripy by the tail and ran right into the water. I was the only person in the water for miles. A few local papers were there and asked if I would like to be on the front page. I sat on Stripy, held out my ruffles, smiled and replied, “Aren’t I cute?” Next day there I was front page of the local paper swimming with dead fish. My mother was mortified.
Not every opinion I have mortifies my mother, sometimes I mortify my father. My father was very athletic when he was younger and to encourage aggressive play during my early soccer years in elem my father would jokingly say “if you draw blood I’ll give you a dollar.’ He was only joking and I never took him seriously. Fast forward to hs where I played varsity fh all four years. I was taking a stroke, a one on one shot b/w me and the goalie; I had a reputation for never missing a shot. This came at a crucial time in the game during a crucial match. I shot lower left and scored. The goalie however, knew how I always shot and dashed to her right side, hitting her helmet against the goal frame and breaking her nose. The medic was there before I reached her. She couldn’t play for two games but she was fine in the end. After the game walking to my car I jokingly nudged my father and said “where’s my dollar though I indirectly drew blood it was her fault for running into the cage.” I was completely unaware that the goalie’s extended family was in town and in fact walking behind me. One of them coughed to get my attention and pointed to his shirt where the goalies face was plastered above the #41. My father promptly turned left to go to his own car.
I’m an equal opportunist so my sister has never had immunity from my accidental mortifications. I love my BIL my his mother smokes around my niece/nephew which I don’t agree with. Earlier this year I rang my sister cell phone and before a hello teasingly said, ““I hope your mil isn’t smoking around my niece and nephew she shouldn’t do that.” The line went quite and this raspy voice replied, your sister left her phone with me while I watch my grandchildren.” Oops.
Oh, I wrote it so speak off of so I don’t really plan on saying ‘elem’ etc.
