How long should breakthrough bleeding last?

I started the pill on August 16th.
At the beginning of September, I got breakthrough bleeding. I had it a week, then it went away for a day and came back, and it still hasn’t stopped.
I’m on the pill that gives you four periods a year.
What’s wrong?
