Groin, abdo and side pain (June 2008 and still going -September 2009)

I had a Mirena coil fitted for heavy periods and iron deficiency anaemia. It wasn’t right for me as I suffered from side-effects of terrible mood swings, hot sweats, back ache, weight gain and more. I was asked on several occasions whilst visiting my GP to try it for a little longer but just before 6 months was up, I found I couldn’t bare it any longer, so I asked for it to be removed.

On the day of removal (almost end of June 08) as instructed, I took a strong pain killer anticipating any pain which I might experience from the removal. Luckily it worked and I hardly felt a thing. Everything was fine and as I was still tired and still feeling a bit moody, I went home to bed after asking for the rest of the day off. About 1 hr later, I started to feel a pain in my groin, just a dull twittering ache. I didn’t think anything of it and was happy when as I noticed that I wasn’t feeling so moody, or sweaty and felt like a big weight had been lifted off my shoulder. The next day the pain became much worse. I rang my GP who told me to come in if it got worse. I went the next day, as it had. She wasn’t sure what it was, checked me over and then prescribed some antibiotics just in case it was an infection. Gradually, it got a lot worse. I went to A&E and was admitted with groin, abdominal and side pain, and pain radiating down my inner and front of thigh.

I stayed in hospital for 4 days until I saw the Consultant. During that time, all they did was try to control the pain and do an abdominal ultrasound scan. They found that I had fibroids, which I already knew, one or two of 3.5 cm in size and several smaller ones. When seen by the Gynaecologist, I was sent home and given an outpatient appointment. When I saw him in clinic, he told me that it wasn’t gynae (more muscular) and that I should have some physio. This didn’t help and they were unsure where to go from here. I became a lot worse and was admitted again, where they did a lot more tests due to having a CT scan and finding a “secondary lesion” and small cyst in my liver. I had an MRI, 2 x-rays, Flexi-sigmoidoscopy and barium enema to make sure I didn’t have cancer. It came back negative. I was discharged back to my GP.

I was off work, barely being able to walk, for 2 months due to the pressure and pain in my abdomen and groin wich was very painful on movement. When I was able to walk a bit better, I went back to work after seeing Occy Health and the fact that a lot of my job is sitting and was to make sure that I don’t do any running around. From since then (15 mths) I have been pushed from pillar to post as no-one seems to know for sure what is causing the pain. All i’m told is “it’s not surgical”, “it’s not gynae”. I went to see the Orthopaedic Surgeon as they found a bit of arthritis in my hip (the disc space is disappearing) and had another hip x-ray, but he said it was slightly worse than last year, but not too bad, not enough to do anything about and was told that this is more than likely what is causing my pain. He recommended physio, anti-inflammatories and a rest. Back to the beginning again. I started out on anti-inflammatories and was taken off them (and physio) as they weren’t doing anything for me.

I am at my witts end with this. Recently, I have had another USS as the Pain Clinic referred me back to Gynae as I told them that I have been noticing a pattern. The pain seems to be a lot worse pre-menstrual, during and just after. The USS showed an enlarged uterus, slightly larger fibroids and no hernia. I’m going to see the Gynaecologist next week for the 4th time, for the results and where to go from here. My GP has told me to suggest to him a diagnostic laparoscopy. I think that I need this. Failing this, I would like to have my uterus removed. My Gynaecologist would like to try analogue tablets to shrink fibroids, but I don’t want to go through any more symptomatic trauma (mimic of menopause), I couldn’t bare it. My family history is all gynae (one sister suffered with similar problems for about 10 years and was told that it was all in her head. At the age of 32, she passed out and had a laparotomy, then had to have a full hysterectomy as she was in a terrible mess inside. Everything had adhered to each other, and she had to have a colostomy bag for a while). I don’t want to have a full hysterectomy, and don’t want to wait until I get as bad as my sister. I am desperate to know what has caused this pain. I also have a lot of diarrhoea and really think that my uterus is pushing on my colon, as well as my bladder, groin and leg. I had to take Co-Codamol and Neurophen to control the pain, but obviously my bowels became blocked. I had Lactulose, but that didn’t work very well. I am now on Tramadol and off work for another week (I was signed off 2 weeks ago as the pain became more constant). It’s ironic as I work in the hospital as a Med Sec and now know exactly how patients feel.
Why is it taking so long to diagnose me? Could this pain really be from the arthritis baring in mind that I have never felt any pain in my hip prior to having this coil removed, and don’t really feel much in my hip. I feel pain in my lower right abdomen, groin and side on almost every step, like i’m standing on them. The pain in my abdomen is where my ovary is and sometimes feels like I am being strangled. You just feel like life is passing you by. I have put on a lot of weight and although the pain is not as drastic as it was when I was smaller (15 mths ago), it is building up again. Lack of exercise is also getting me down as each time I start to move about the pain gets worse and I start limping, and the feeling of being part of a freak show springs to mind.

Can anyone spread any light on this subject? I have read other women’s stories on the internet and find that a lot of them have had the same symptoms and have been told the same. I see that most have had a hysterectomy and are now feeling 100% better, but some aren’t. I think that it is high time I got some answers.

Hoping that there is someone out there who can spread some light on my plight and put me out of my misery. I am normally a very happy jolly person but not sure how long I can keep this going as everyone has a breaking point.
