If you cut a meter into 1000 equal sized pieces, one of those pieces would be 1 millimeter. (1 mm = 1/1000 m)

If you cut a meter into 100 equal sized pieces, one of those pieces would be 1 centimeter. (1 cm = 1/100 m).

That means that if you want to convert a millimeters to centimeters, you have to divide the number of mm by 10 to get the number of cm.

mm/10 = cm.
or
1 mm = 0.1 cm
