How do I divide this evenly?

I am working on a model of a cantilever structure. The base is made up of 6 evenly spaced pillars. The pillars are all 1 inch wide. They sit under one long plank that is 10 inches long. The two pillars on the end need to sit flush (up against) the edge of the 10 inch plank. What should I space them so they are all even?

Okay, so since the pillars are 1 inch wide that would leave 4 inches of empty spaces. There would be 5 gaps between the pillars, so for them to be spaces evenly there would have to be 4/5 of an inch between each pillar.

Thank you. I don’t know why this baffled me as much as it did. You explained it so easily.I feel like an idiot now. :D

Woops. I spoke to soon. Turns out that the two pillars on the end are 3/4 inch long, not 1 inch. So, two on the end are 3/4 and four in the middle are 1 inch. How do I divide THAT evenly… ?

Okay, well if want to gaps between them to be even there would be 5.5 inches of empty space. Divided into 5 gaps that would give you 1.1 inches between pillars.

If you want them to be evenly spaced based on the centers of the pillars the first and last center would be 3/8 inch in leaving a distance of 9 2/8 inches between them. Divide by 5 again for five gaps and each pillars center would be 1 17/20 inches from the two adjacent pillars. Or, by subtracting the different radii of the pillars, the gaps between the 1 inch pillars would be 17/20 of an inch and the gaps between the 1 inch and 3/4 inch pillars would be 39/40 of an inch.
