Can I resign effective immediately based on what happened?

Or do I have to give a two week notice?
I work in a retail store part-time (and intern in d.c), i’ve been working in the store for over a year and I was scheduled for an on-call shift (4 to 11pm) today. I called in at 9a.m and told them that I was in no condition to work, because I was experiencing flu symptoms (fever, cough, nausea, soar-throat) and feeling horrible. They knew I was sick because I had worked the night before and had been coughing and with a temperature. Well, it so happens that the assistant manager that I talked to told me and i quote: “If you don’t come in today, then forget about putting us as reference in your next job application”. So I had to go in, with a fever, nausea and a bad cough.
Later, I found out that the reason that they needed me there was because one of the other sales associates was going to the assistant managers birthday party at a bar and wanted to leave at 9pm so she could make it (even though she was actually scheduled for a full shift and not on call). So at 9pm she left, and we were left one person short for closing and the 2 people that were closing weren’t even scheduled to close in the first place, just so this girl could be at the managers birthday party. I’m quitting the job because clearly they don’t have my best interest in mind as an employee or person, but I want to make sure i don’t keep this to myself when i leave, what can i do?

First of all, talk to whoever is above the manager that told you that. Hopefully that person will be reasonable enough to make sure you get a good reference. Then, if you enjoy working retail, quit wherever you are now and apply at Target. Ive worked at many a retail chain and Target is by far the most emplloyee friendly and really seem to have everyones best interests at heart.

Just work your notice. Resign immediately is not good.
